Gophers Fall at Washington; Tyson Scores 22 Points

2/14/2026 10:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson had team-high totals of 22 points, nine rebounds, and three steals, Bobby Durkin had 13 points, and Isaac Asuma added 11 for the Gophers, but Washington (13-13, 5-10 Big Ten) shot a season-high 63 percent and used an extended 23-4 run to snap a three-game losing streak with a 69-57 win versus Minnesota (11-14, 4-10 Big Ten) at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Minnesota, which was playing without starting forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson, led 26-25 with 4:46 remaining in the first half, but the Huskies outscored the Gophers 14-0 to close the half and then extended the run to 23-4 early in the second half to build a 48-30 lead. Minnesota twice cut UW's lead to 11 points, but that's as close as the shorthanded Gophers were able to get in dropping their second game in a row.

Tyson made 6-of-12 field goals, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and was 7-of-8 at the line to lead the Gophers with 22 points. It was Tyson's 24th game in double-figures this season, including his 10th game with 20 or more points. Durkin was 5-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and Asuma was 5-of-11 and added two rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Langston Reynolds had seven points and Grayson Grove finished with four points and three rebounds, making a start in place of Crocker-Johnson.

Minnesota made 21-of-49 (.429) field goals, including 7-of-28 three-pointers, and 8-of-12 free throws, but the Huskies were red-hot, making 29-of-46 (.630) attempts. Washington was 4-of-13 (.308) from behind the three-point line, made 7-of-13 (.538) free throws, and had a 30-21 edge in rebounds. The Huskies outscored Minnesota 44-26 in the paint. Hannes Steinbach led all players with 26 points for UW, while Zoom Diallo finished with 17 points and four assists.

Minnesota fell behind 4-0 to start, but the Gophers answered with a 7-2 run, keyed by a Tyson three-pointer from the top of the key. Diallo hit his first three-pointer to put the Huskies up, 9-7, but Durkin drained a three and Grove drove the length of the court for a layup to put Minnesota up 12-9 with 14:12 left. A 4-0 UW run gave the Huskies a one-point lead, but Tyson drove to the hoop for a layup for a 14-13 lead at the second media timeout. Tyson knocked down his second three-pointer to put the Gophers up 17-13, but UW scored five straight to retake a one-point lead. Asuma scored on a left-handed layup to put the Gophers up one at 19-18, but Diallo and Steinbach scored for the Huskies to give UW a 22-19 lead before Reynolds scored in the lane to cut it to 22-21 with 7:02 remaining.

The Huskies extended the lead to four points, but Tyson added a layup and Durkin connected on his second three-pointer of the half for a 26-25 Gophers lead with 4:46 remaining, and UW called a timeout. UW responded with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 31-26, forcing Niko Medved to call a timeout with 3:02 remaining. The Huskies extended it to a 14-0 run to build a 39-26 halftime lead, as Minnesota was held scoreless for the final 4:45 of the half.

Tyson led the Gophers with 12 first-half points, while Durkin added six points, and Reynolds had four. As a team, the Gophers made 11-of-30 (.367) field goal, including 4-of-17 (.235) three-pointers, and 0-of-1 free throws. Steinbach paced UW with 11 points and six rebounds at the break, with Diallo adding seven points. The Huskies were 16-of-24 (.667) from the field, including 3-of-7 (.429) from beyond the arc, and 4-of-6 at the line, while holding an 18-11 rebound advantage.

Layups from Asuma and Reynolds, and Durkin's third three-pointer of the night kept Minnesota within 48-33 at the first media timeout, but the Huskies continued their red-hot shooting from the first half by making 4-of-5 to start the second half. A free throw by Reynolds and an Asuma layup cut the deficit to 12 points with 14:16 remaining, but a three-point play from Steinbach put the Huskies up 51-36. A backdoor layup by Durkin put him in double figures with 11 points and cut it to 51-38 at the second media timeout. A pair of Tyson free throws pulled the Gophers within 11, but a 6-2 UW run put the Huskies up 57-42, and Medved called timeout with 8:06 remaining.

A Durkin layup made it 57-44, but six-straight points from Diallo stretched UW's lead to 63-44 with 5:50 left. Tyson's third three-pointer of the game and a layup by Grove trimmed it to 65-49 with 4:12 remaining, but the Huskies expanded the lead to 20 with 2:59 left. Tyson went 5-of-5 at the free throw line and Asuma made a three-pointer in the final seconds to cut the final margin to 12 points.

The Gophers remain in the Pacific Northwester for a game at Oregon on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Tipoff from Eugene, Ore., is set for 9:30 p.m. CT, and the game will be played televised on FS1.
