MINNEAPOLIS – The Big Ten Conference announced the first of its postseason cross country awards on Wednesday, with fifth-year Izzy Roemer and junior Sam Scott both earning the conference's Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Awards add on to first-team All-Big Ten honors for Ali Weimer and Isabelle Schmitz and second-team honors for Aidan Jones and Emmett Gerres at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on October 30.
The Sportsmanship Award honorees are individuals who have set themselves apart through hard work, sportsmanship and honorable behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship outside of the sports setting.
A native of Chanhassen, Minn., Roemer has been among Minnesota's top five finishers in all five races this season, highlighted by her lifetime best 6K performance at the Griak Invitational (20:06.3) on Sept. 18. At the Big Ten Championships she placed 40th overall, which matched her best career finish in four appearances. A graduate of Chanhassen High School, Roemer is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Scott had three top-five finishes within the Gopher lineup this season highlighted by a career-best time of 23:24.36 to place 36th overall at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 25. Competing in his second Big Ten Championships, he finished in 56th place as the Gophers earned their best team finish since 2021. Hailing from Minneapolis and a graduate of Minneapolis Southwest High School, he was an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season.
The postseason continues for Minnesota as both the men's and women's teams will head to Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 13, for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Competition at the Iowa State Cross Country Course will begin with the women's race at 11AM followed by the men's competition at Noon.
