WESTMONT, ILL. – University of Minnesota senior Katie McCarthy has qualified for the U.S. national team for the 2026 Short Course World Championships in December, speeding to a top-20 time in the world this year in the women's 1500m freestyle this afternoon.

As the only athlete competing in the women's 1500m freestyle at the trials, McCarthy only needed to post an overall time of 16:37.32 to qualify for the team. McCarthy shattered that threshold, tallying a final time of 16:10.50, a mark fast enough to rank among the top-20 internationally for women's 1500m swimmers.

Action at the U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials continues tomorrow in Westmont, beginning at 10:00 AM (CT) in the FMC Natatorium.
