Captain's two goals erase a two-goal deficit in shootout win
DULUTH, Minn. - Brodie Ziemer scored twice for the 20th-ranked Golden Gophers men's hockey team during a 2-2 tie against the No. 9 Bulldogs Saturday evening from AMSOIL Arena. Wyatt Cullen and LJ Mooney each scored in the shootout, while Luca Di Pasquo stopped 2-of-3 attempts to win the shootout.
Ziemer's two goals helped the Gophers (0-3-1 overall, 0-0-0 B1G) erase a two-goal deficit on the road versus UMD (3-1-2 overall, 0-0-0 NCHC). The junior tallied his goals exactly six minutes apart in the second period, including a power-play goal that evened the game.
It was a much more energized start from the visitors than the prior night, which led to a man advantage less than five minutes into the contest. Despite multiple chances on target, including a close-range shot by Mooney, the Gophers could not put one away, and the minor penalty was erased. A defensive-zone penalty on Minnesota allowed the Bulldogs their first man advantage, where the defense shut down every play to keep the game scoreless.
With just 29.6 seconds showing on the clock, the home side struck for the go-ahead tally as the Gophers were unable to clear the zone. After a scramble in front of the net, a shot from the point found a way through traffic, putting the Bulldogs in front, 1-0, through 20 minutes of action.
The Gophers were forced to an early penalty kill in the second period and were seconds away from wiping it off the board but a set play off a faceoff win allowed UMD to double its advantage at the 4:28 mark. The visitors quickly answered less than two minutes later as Evan Murr won a puck battle in the corner and fed a pass to the bottom of the circle where Ziemer was waiting. The junior did not miss, and his one-timer cut the deficit to one.
After building momentum with its goal, Minnesota earned another power-play opportunity in the middle of the stanza. It was Ziemer again that delivered the tying tally on the man advantage as he took a goal-line feed from Cullen, shot between his legs and got a fortunate bounce off a UMD defender, making it a 2-2 contest. The Gophers needed to kill off a penalty in the final minute of the frame to maintain the deadlock at intermission.
The remaining 80 seconds of the Bulldogs' man advantage were erased by the visitors to open the third period. The Gophers got caught up the ice for an odd-man rush the other way where Di Pasquo made a cross-crease save to deny the home team. The action went up and down the rink and Minnesota forced a neutral-zone turnover in the last 90 seconds of regulation, leading to a quality chance from Beckett Hendrickson. The Bulldogs pushed to the opposite end where Di Pasquo had to make a critical save before the game headed into overtime.
Di Pasquo stood square to the puck in the extra session and made a sparkling save to extend the contest. The senior continued to shine and secured the tie as he denied a chance at the right post as the buzzer sounded inside AMSOIL Arena. He went on to stop two attempts in the shootout, allowing Cullen and Mooney to each score and claim the win.

Coach Larson's Comments
"This team played a lot better tonight and is starting to show what they can do. As a new coach especially, my goal has just been growth every weekend. And I just thought we did see some really good growth tonight," Minnesota head coach Brett Larson said. "I know it's been a little bumpy the first couple weekends, but boy, this tough stuff we've gone through is going to help this team get a lot better."
