Gophers Take Down No. 1 Ohio State

10/16/2026 9:07:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team took down top-ranked Ohio State 6-2 Friday evening at Ridder Arena. Strong special teams play and an explosive start propelled the Gophers to the victory, handing the Buckeyes their first loss of the season.

Just 14 seconds into the contest, Adrianna Milani intercepted a Buckeye pass on the forecheck, skated through the slot and fired a shot high to the blocker side to give Minnesota an early 1-0 lead.

Madison Kaiser doubled the Gophers' advantage at the 3:49 mark of the first period. Following an Ashley Allard faceoff win, Allard made a diving play to deliver the puck to Kaiser, who skated in alone on the Ohio State goaltender and buried a wrist shot high to the glove side to make it 2-0.

Chloe Primerano extended Minnesota's lead to 3-0 with just five seconds remaining in the opening frame. On the power play, Primerano fired a shot from the high slot through traffic in front of the net and into the back of the net.

Milani struck again at the 2:43 mark of the second period, capitalizing on another Minnesota power-play opportunity. Primerano found Milani with a stretch pass that freed her at the blue line. On a two-on-one rush, Milani fired another wrist shot high into the net to record her third multi-goal game of the season and push the Gophers' lead to 4-0.

Ohio State responded with a pair of goals late in the third period while capitalizing on a Minnesota major penalty. The Buckeyes broke through on the power play at the 17:28 mark before adding another goal shortly after the major penalty expired to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Minnesota answered with two late goals of its own to seal the 6-2 victory. Allard scored her first goal in the Maroon and Gold at the 15:36 mark, cleaning up a rebound in front after a Sarah Paul shot. Just over two minutes later, Kaiser recorded her second goal of the night, finishing a backhand shot off a setup from Milani to cap the scoring.

With the win, Minnesota remains undefeated at 5-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in WCHA play, while Ohio State falls to 6-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference action.
