'U' Drops Series Finale at No. 9 Penn State Saturday

1/10/2026 7:45:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Ziemer, Moore score for Gophers in setback

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Golden Gophers men's hockey team got goals from Brodie Ziemer and Javon Moore but could not earn the series split, falling 5-2 at No. 9 Penn State Saturday night inside Pegula Ice Arena.
Ā
Ziemer put Minnesota (8-12-1 overall, 4-6-0 B1G, 13 points) on the board early before the Nittany Lions (14-6-0 overall, 6-4-0 B1G, 19 points) responded with three goals in the first period and tacked on an empty-net goal to close the weekend.
Ā
After goaltender Nathan Airey made two key saves to begin the series finale, the speed of the Maroon and Gold was on full display as it built a forecheck in the opening minutes. That led to a quick tally, just 3:27 into the action, as Ziemer chipped a puck past the defense at his own blue line and was off to the races, burying a shot from the right circle. A rebound attempt by Beckett Hendrickson two minutes later nearly doubled the lead, but it was a breakaway for Penn State that pulled the home side even at 5:33.
Ā
Halfway through the opening frame, penalties were assessed to both teams on back-to-back sequences and despite extended zone time on each main advantage, neither Penn State, nor Minnesota was able to capitalize on its chances. PSU took control of the contest by scoring twice in the last three minutes of the period, including a goal with 16.5 seconds on the clock, for a 3-1 edge at the first intermission.
Ā
Luca Di Pasquo moved into goal for the Maroon and Gold to begin the second stanza and the junior was called upon for two critical saves in the opening two minutes. The saves helped spark the Gophers' attack as Teddy Townsend patiently waited for Moore to jump into the play and sauced over a pass that Moore hammered home via a one-timer from the right circle 2:20 into the frame. Energy stayed with the visitors and Brody Lamb had a rebound at the side of the goal to get the equalizer as did Finn McLaughlin when he jumped into the attack from the blue line.
Ā
With 13:13 left in the middle period, Minnesota was called for a five-minute major, while PSU got a minor for roughing at the same time, and the teams skated 4-on-4 for two minutes. LJ Mooney had a redirect in front of the goal that had to be stopped before the home side went to an extended man advantage. Di Pasquo was brilliant to shut down the surging attack of the Nittany Lions before a scramble in front led to a goal. The Gophers correctly challenged the play for goaltender interference, and the goal was wiped off the scoreboard. After erasing the rest of the major penalty, the tenacious forecheck of the visitors led to another power play chance but it could not convert with four shots on target. It was all Minnesota for the remainder of the frame as the ice tilted in its favor, going back to the locker room facing a 3-2 deficit.
Ā
The Nittany Lions pushed back as they looked to extend their lead early in the final frame before it was the Gophers that built momentum and went on the attack. A minor penalty to the visitors with 8:27 remaining in regulation required a strong effort from Di Pasquo to negate the power play. Minnesota pressed down the stretch, only to see PSU double its lead to 4-2 via an odd-man rush.
Ā
With 2:13 to play in regulation, the Gophers decided to pull their goalie and seconds later, drew a penalty on a dangerous hit to skate 6-on-4. PSU added an empty-net tally while shorthanded in the closing seconds to end the night with a 5-2 victory.
Ā
Noteworthy
After Ziemer's three-game goal streak was snapped Friday, the sophomore quickly returned to his offensive ways, setting a new career high on his 13th goal of the year, and became the first Gopher to reach 20 points in 2025-26 ... A native of Chaska, Minn., he has nine goals over his past nine outings behind the first unassisted tally of his career, and scored the opening goal of a game for the fourth time this year ... Moore continues to increase his point total during his freshman season, potting his fifth goal and 13th point ... Four goals and 11 of those points have come across the last 10 appearances ... Townsend secured his first collegiate helper in the second period and now has three points this season ... Moe made it an all freshmen scoring play on the goal as he picked up the secondary assist, his fourth assist and ninth point for the year ... Di Pasquo closed the night by making 27 saves across the last two frames, while Airey turned away 11 shots during the first period ... Jimmy Clark and Tanner Ludtke each won 10 faceoffs to lead the Gophers Saturday ... Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"A complete reversal from last night. Our guys played their tails off, and it's a shame we got down 3-1 on a couple of mistakes," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "I thought we had a great first period and an even better second and third. Luca went in after one and did a great job and held it in. We got it within one, and unfortunately, we were chasing the game, but our guys fought their tails off from start to finish, and that's something we can be proud of. But we're on it and we can get better on that."
