Gophers picked third in preseason coaches' poll
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Luke Mittelstadt from the University of Minnesota men's hockey team was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Conference Second Team, while the Golden Gophers were picked to finish third in the 2025-26 preseason poll, it was announced Thursday. The seven head coaches from the league voted on the honors.
Mittelstadt was selected as a team captain for the Maroon and Gold as he gets set for his senior season. An All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection following his sophomore campaign in 2023-24, the Eden Prairie, Minn., native earned a preseason honor for the second time in his tenure. He appeared in all 40 games a year ago and tallied 18 points on two goals and 16 assists. He tied for the team lead in assists during league play (13), while posting a plus-23 rating and ranked among Minnesota's shot-blocking leaders.
Over his Gopher career, he has totaled 59 points in 116 games and helped Minnesota to a pair of conference championships, three NCAA Regional appearances, and a trip to the NCAA Frozen Four. A consistent contributor at both ends of the ice, Mittelstadt has been an Academic All-B1G honoree in each of his last two seasons.
Coming off its conference-record seventh regular season title and a 25-11-4 overall record, Minnesota was picked to finish behind two-time defending B1G Tournament champion Michigan State and Penn State, last year's lone B1G participant at the NCAA Frozen Four.
Season tickets and single-game tickets for all men's hockey home games remain on sale and can be purchased at www.GopherSports.com or by calling the ticket office at 1-800-U-GOPHER. The Gophers are just a week away from taking the ice for their 105th season when Michigan Tech comes to 3M Arena at Mariucci for a series Oct. 3-4.
