Hooten was a 13-time All-American for Minnesota from 2021-25
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota gymnastics has completed its coaching staff with the hiring of 13-time All-American Mya Hooten as an assistant coach, the program announced Tuesday. Hooten joins the coaching staff after competing for the program from 2021-25, helping the team make five NCAA Regionals and two nationals appearances in addition to winning the 2021 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis.
"Hiring Mya isn't just a win for our gymnastics program — it's a celebration of Minnesota pride," said coach Hansen. "She's not only one of the most electrifying performers in collegiate gymnastics, but also a role model whose impact reaches far beyond our sport. Mya embodies the spirit, strength, and excellence that define the University of Minnesota and inspire our entire state."
The lone Golden Gopher to qualify for nationals this year as an individual, Hooten capped off a sensational in the Maroon and Gold. As a senior in 2025, she won 16 event titles, including 10 on floor in 15 meets. She won four vault and two bars event titles as well.
The two-time AAI Award Nominee finished her time at Minnesota with 13 All-America honors, including eight from the WCGA and five from the NCAA Championships. She is two-time First Team NCAA Championships All-American on floor (2021 and 2022) and a Second Team NCAA Championships All-American.
"I'm incredibly blessed to get the opportunity to be a part of this amazing program," Hooten said. "Coaching this team is truly a dream come true. This program has meant so much to me over the years, so to come back in this way is such a full-circle moment. I'm so thankful and excited for what's ahead."
She completed her time in Dinkytown as a six-time Big Ten Champion, four-time First Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Championships honoree, a 13-time Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week, four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a 2024 First Team CSC Academic All-American.
Hooten was the first ever Golden Gopher to earn a 'Perfect 10' on the floor, and she did so nine times. Other honors taken home during her career include one Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award, two WCGA Scholastic All-American nods and twice being named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch.
She joins head coach Jenny Hansen and assistant coaches Kiki Parenteau and Sam Scherwinski on staff.
The Woodbury, Minn., native completed her bachelor's degree in business and marketing education from the 'U' in 2023 before earning her master's from the Carlson School of Management in human resources and industrial relations this spring.
