Sam Scherwinski Hired as Gymnastics Assistant Coach

The Wisconsin native spent the 2025 season at Nebraska
The Green Bay, Wis., native spent seven years living in Minnesota growing up and his entire family is originally from Minneapolis.
"I'm so excited to be coming home to Minnesota and joining the Gopher gymnastics family!" said Scherwinski. "This program's tradition of excellence and commitment to competing at the highest level makes this opportunity truly special for me. I'm very grateful to coach Hansen for trusting me with this role and I'm thrilled to help build on the legacy of success that's already been created here at Minnesota."
In his season with the Huskers, Scherwinski helped Nebraska to their third-straight appearance in the second round of the NCAA Championships. He served as the lead coach on vault and floor. With his help, nineteen Nebraska athletes notched career highs during 2024-25, including three on vault. Five Huskers earned a career high on the floor with Scherwinski's help.

"He is an up-and-coming coach with a deep passion for the sport and a genuine enthusiasm for developing not only great gymnasts, but great people. Dedicated and driven, Sam is committed to building every aspect of the program while also creating a positive and exciting environment for each athlete to reach their full potential."
Prior to his time at Nebraska, Scherwinski served Lindenwood University as the team's main uneven bars coach. He helped the team achieve tremendous success in 2024 and with that he was named the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year and the MIC Assistant Coach of the Year. Two of his student-athletes won conference titles on uneven bars and in the all-around. The team also broke six all-time program records and Scherwinski helped Lindenwood student-athletes to 14 USAG All-America honors.
In 2023, Scherwinski coached the Lions to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship, where two athletes won individual titles. Lindenwood gymnasts also earned 16 MIC All-Conference honors.
Before his time at Lindenwood, Scherwinski also coached at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. There, he helped athletes earn numerous top finishes in the WIAC Conference and DIII National Championships.
Scherwinski was a competitive Level 10 gymnast before beginning his coaching career. He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in May 2021 and his master's degree in Sport Coaching from West Virginia in December 2022.
