Two hits each from Tobias, Chavez
MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota softball team totaled five hits but was not able to record a run against Michigan and fell 8-0 in five innings Saturday.
Seniors Margaret Tobias and Kayla Chavez each had two-hit efforts for the Golden Gophers, while junior pitcher Syndey Schwartz had the other. Schwartz (10-15) got the ball to start for the Golden Gophers (20-29, 5-16) and took the loss in the circle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the shutout despite its first two batters of the afternoon reaching safely. The Gophers put runners on the corners in the fourth, when freshman Tinley Easton made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs. The Wolverines held off the home team and went on to secure the run-rule victory, 8-0.
GAME NOTES
» Minnesota pitchers faced 28 Michigan hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and five fly balls while striking out four.
» Tobias and Chavez led the Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively.
» Michigan was led offensively by junior Maddie Erickson, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
» Derkowski led the Wolverines pitching staff, throwing five scoreless innings.
