MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling is sending 12 to the 2025 U23 Nationals and U20 World Team Trials this weekend in Geneva, Ohio. The event takes place May 30 through Jun 1 at Spire Academy and will be streamed on FloWrestling.
Three Gophers are scheduled to compete in the U20 Freestyle Team Trials, headlined by redshirt sophomore Max McEnelly. The reigning All-American won the U20 86 kg title at the U.S. Open last month, moving him directly to the best-of-three finals against the winner from the bracket tournament. In addition, true freshmen Charlie Millard (74 kg) and Koy Hopke (125 kg) are also scheduled to compete, while Blake Beissel (57 kg) qualified but will not compete due to illness. The winners of the trials will represent the United States at the U20 World Championships in Bulgaria, August 18-24.
Nine more Gophers are set to take part in the U23 Freestyle Nationals: fifth-year senior Tommy Askey (74 kg), redshirt juniors Jager Eisch (65 kg), Drew Roberts (70 kg) and Bennett Tabor (125 kg), redshirt freshmen Rhett Koenig (65 kg), Gavin Nelson (92 kg) and Ethan Riddle (79 kg), and true freshmen Silas Dailey (86 kg) and Wyatt Duchateau (65 kg).
According to FloWrestling, the U23 World Team spot at each weight will automatically go to a Senior National Team member at that weight. However, if no National Team member is eligible at that weight, the spot will go to the tournament winner.
Action for both the U20 and U23 entrants starts Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT with Session I, featuring prelims and consolations. The U20 portion will also feature quarterfinals, semifinals and challenge finals. Session II starts at 3 p.m. with medal matches and the best-of-three finals for U20, while U23 continues with more prelims and consolations. Sunday's Session III begins at 9 a.m. CT with U23 quarterfinals, semifinals, consolations, medal matches, and best-of-three finals.
