Sixteen Gophers Set to Compete at U.S. Open Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling will be well represented at the 2025 CLAW U.S. Open Events as 16 Gophers are heading to Las Vegas this weekend. The event takes place April 23-27 at The Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas and will be streamed on FloWrestling.
Five Gophers are scheduled to compete in Senior Freestyle: redshirt senior Theo Cha (70 kg), redshirt junior Drew Roberts (70 kg), redshirt sophomore Clayton Whiting (79 kg), and redshirt freshmen Gavin Nelson (92 kg) and Ethan Riddle (79 kg). Whiting and Nelson both earned the No. 8 pre-seeds at their respective weights.
Action for those five starts Friday with prelims, quarterfinals and consolations beginning at 12 p.m. CT. Semifinals and consolations take place Friday night starting at 6 p.m., while action picks back up Saturday at 12 p.m. with consolation semifinals and medal matches. Senior Freestyle concludes Saturday night with the championship finals at 8 p.m.
Eleven more Gophers are competing in U20 Freestyle: redshirt freshmen Rhett Koenig (65 kg) and Max McEnelly (86 kg), true freshmen Blake Beissel (57 kg), Silas Dailey (86 kg), Wyatt Duchateau (65 kg), Koy Hopke (125 kg), Dawson Johnson (65 kg), Charlie Millard (74 kg), Jack Nelson (70 kg) and Jed Wester (79 kg), and incoming freshman Brett Swenson (61 kg).
Those 11 start their prelims Saturday at 12 p.m. CT, followed by championship rounds at 6 p.m. that night. Sunday features quarterfinals and semifinals starting at 12 p.m. with championship bouts and medal matches set for 4 p.m.
