‘U’ Falls in Saturday’s In-State Battle

MANKATO, MINN. – The No. 2-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center.

The Mavericks opened the scoring at 13:22 of the first period, capitalizing on a power play to take a 1-0 lead.

The Gophers answered quickly, pulling even just over a minute later. On the power play, Abbey Murphy threaded a pass to Josefin Bouveng at the back post, and Bouveng buried the finish to tie the game and extend her point streak to 15 consecutive contests.

Minnesota State regained the lead at 11:53 of the second period on a breakaway and added to their advantage with a back-door goal at 14:01 to go up 3-1 heading into the final frame.

The Mavericks sealed the result with an empty-net tally at 18:12 of the third to close out the scoring.

With the result, Minnesota moves to 12-4-0 (8-4-0 WCHA), while Minnesota State improves to 8-7-1 (4-7-1 WCHA).

- Layla Hemp stopped 21 shots in between the pipes for the Gophers.
