Minnesota Hits the Road for Test at Kansas

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten) hits the road for its first road contest of the season against the Kansas Jayhawks (4-0, 0-0 Big 12). Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be streamed live on ESPN+ with Josh Klingler and Wayne Simien. Fans can listen live on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on the call.

  • The Gophers grabbed their fourth win of the season on Friday, defeating the NJIT Highlanders 88-39 at Williams Arena. 
  • Following Friday's game, Minnesota has now scored 88 points or more through its first four games for the first time in program history.
  • In their last four games, the Gophers have shot 40% or better while holding opponents under 40%.
  • The Maroon and Gold received 24 votes in this week's AP Poll that came out on Monday.
  • Minnesota ranks second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio and first in the Big Ten, is eighth nationally and second in the conference with 24.5 assists per game, and finished third in the country and first in the league in fewest turnovers per game at 8.
  • Sophie Hart has since doubled her scoring average from last season, averaging 13.8 points per game. Last season, the graduate was averaging 7.25 points through the first four games.Against the Highlanders, Amaya Battle became only the fifth Gopher in program history to reach 1,000 points and 500 assists. She joins Rachel Banham (3,093 points, 522 assists), Lindsay Whalen (2,285 points, 578 assists), Kenisha Bell (1,754 points, 511 assists) and Debbie Hunter (1,363 points, 633 assists).
  • Sophomore Tori McKinney leads Minnesota with 11 steals this season, averaging 2.7 per game. Last season, she had four steals through her first four games as a freshman. The guard has also doubled her scoring output, totaling 52 points so far; last year, she had 23 points through the first four games.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • Minnesota trails the all-time series 4-14, going 4-4 at Williams Arena, 0-7 at Allen Fieldhouse and 0-3 at neutral sites in a series that dates back to 1978.
  • The Gophers and Jayhawks last met Nov. 20, 2013, at Williams Arena, with Minnesota taking a 70-59 win.
  • Minnesota is 31-42 against Big 12 Conference opponents.
 
SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKS
  • Head coach Brandon Schneider is in his 11th season leading the Jayhawks and 28th overall as a collegiate head coach.
  • Schneider has guided Kansas to a winning record five times in the past six seasons, including two NCAA Tournament appearances (2022, 2024) and the 2023 WNIT championship.
  • Junior guard S'Mya Nichols was a unanimous selection to the preseason All-Big 12 Women's Basketball team for the second consecutive season, while the Jayhawks were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll.
  • Kansas is 4-0 to start the season, with wins over Kansas City, Northwestern State, Lamar, and Missouri.
  • In Kansas' win over Missouri, Nichols and Elle Evans each scored 20 points in the 82-77 victory. Jailya Davis and Regan Williams added double-digit points, scoring 15 and 14, respectively.
