'U' Shutout Saturday to Close Border Battle Trip

11/1/2025 8:30:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MADISON, Wis. - The Golden Gophers men's hockey team suffered a 4-0 loss at No. 14 Wisconsin inside Kohl Center Saturday evening, ending their first Big Ten Conference series of the season.

Minnesota (2-7-1 overall, 0-2-0 B1G) dropped its fourth-straight game overall as the Badgers (6-0-2 overall, 2-0-0 B1G) scored twice on the power play to finish a weekend sweep.

The Maroon and Gold came out strong, controlling play early and recording the first five shots on goal. Tate Pritchard, Jimmy Clark, and Mason Moe each generated quality scoring chances during a fast-paced opening six minutes. Despite the early surge, the Badgers struck first at 8:17 when a blocked shot deflected into the slot and was buried for a 1-0 lead. Both teams had brief power-play opportunities late in the period but could not convert, and Wisconsin carried the one-goal advantage into the intermission.

A Gopher penalty five minutes into the second frame led to Wisconsin's first power-play goal, doubling the lead to 2-0. The period featured a more physical tone and several turnovers in both zones that created dangerous looks for each side. Minnesota battled to generate offense but took a late penalty, allowing the Badgers to maintain their two-goal cushion through 40 minutes.

The Maroon and Gold nearly killed off the carryover penalty to start the third, but a bouncing puck found its way past the defense and was chipped home for another power-play tally at 1:39. The Badgers struck again just 21 seconds later on a deflected shot from the left point to make it 4-0. LJ Mooney pushed a pass across the crease before Erik Pahlsson's shot was stopped as the Gophers increased their attacking pressure down the stretch. The effort did not pay off as the Badgers claimed a 4-0 victory and a series sweep.

Noteworthy
Airey closed the night by making 25 saves, including 10 in the third period Saturday ... The Maroon and Gold went 0-for-1 on the man advantage, while the Badgers converted 2-of-4 power-play chances ... Clark and Brodie Ziemer tallied four shots apiece to lead the team ... The Gophers have allowed their opponents to open the scoring in four-straight outings ... Minnesota's losing streak is its longest since ending the 2017-18 campaign with four-consecutive losses.

Coach Motzko's Comments
"We can play with the effort we had tonight," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "Ultimately, we needed to score a goal to stay in the game and give ourselves a better chance on the road. And that was it."
