No. 20 'U' Falls in Reverse Sweep to No. 11 Purdue

Sunday was Minnesota's first five set match this season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 20 Minnesota volleyball team fell to the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers in a reverse sweep on Sunday afternoon. The set scores were 19-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21, 18-16. 

Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 19 kills and a career-high four service aces. Carly Gilk went for 15 kills while Lourdes Myers had four kills and a season-high blocks in her return to Purdue.

The Gophers (16-5, 6-4 Big Ten) were outhit by the Boilermakers (17-3, 8-2 Big Ten) .269 to .253. Purdue led in kills (74 to 60) and digs (65 to 53) but the 'U' led in blocks (14 to 7) and aces (11 to 6).

For PU, Kenna Wollard had 23 kills and 10 digs while Grace Heaney had 22 kills and 11 digs. Taylor Anderson went for 59 assists and eight digs.



How It Happened
SET 1 | The Gophers came out red hot, scoring seven of the first 10 points. Hanson had three kills, a block and an ace in the first seven points. Purdue would cut the lead to two at 9-7 before the Gophers erupted on a 6-2 run to head into the media break leading 15-9. Hanson, Kinney and Swenson had kills while Myers had a block with Swenson. PU scored three in-a-row after the break, forcing Minnesota's first timeout of the frame, leading 15-12. PU kept their momentum going, scoring five of the next six to turn a 15-9 deficit into a 17-16 lead. The Gophers called their final timeout at that point. Minnesota bounced back by scoring three of the next four to go up 19-18, forcing PU's final timeout of the frame. Gilk had a pair of kills in the run. Minnesota would not slow down, scoring six of the final seven points to win set one, 25-19. Minnesota hit .517 for the set, led by Hanson with six kills and Gilk with four. Minnesota had four aces as well.

SET 2 | The Gophers came out strong in the second set again, scoring seven of the first 10 points. Lourdes Myers had a kill and a block in the spurt while Kelly Kinney had a kill and an ace. PU would score four of the next five to make it 8-7 before kills from Hanson and Taylor combined with an ace from Swenson made it 11-7, Minnesota. Purdue then called its first timeout of the set. After a kill and a block from PU, Minnesota tallied six of the next seven, taking a commanding 17-10 lead. After two PU points, Minnesota scored three of the next four on kills from Gilk and Hanson along with an ace from Julia to go up 20-13. The Boilermakers burned their last timeout of the set after that. Hanson added two more aces in-a-row after the break to put the 'U' up 22-13. Minnesota would finish the second set with a 25-17 victory to go up two sets to none.

SET 3 | Purdue was the aggressor to start the third set, scoring six of the first eight before Minnesota called timeout. The Gophers would fight back, cutting the lead to as few as three at 12-9 after kills from Gilk, Kinney and Taylor along with an ace from Kinney. After a pair of Purdue points, the Gophers sliced the lead to just one at 14-13 after kills from Kinney and Swenson combined with a block from Myers and Swenson. The Gophers would eventually tie it at 17 following kills from Gilk and Taylor. The 'U' took its first lead of the set at 19-18 following a kill from Hanson. Another kill from her put Minnesota up 20-18, forcing a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers responded after that, scoring three straight to retake the lead, 21-20. Minnesota burned its final timeout at that point. Kills from Hanson and Gilk helped the Gophers tie it up at 23-all, causing PU to call its final timeout. Minnesota had a chance for the sweep, leading 25-24, but Purdue tallied the final three points on a pair of kills and an ace to win, 27-25.

SET 4 | Set four was back and forth the whole way through the first 20 points, with no one leading by more than a point at any time. Purdue scored two straight with the score at 10-10 to go up 12-10. Minnesota would eventually tie it up at 12-12 following a Hanson kill and PU error. The Boilermakers went into the media break leading 15-14. Purdue would score three of the next four after the break, taking an 18-15 lead before Minnesota called timeout. PU kept up the pace, going up 22-17 before the Gophers called their final timeout. Minnesota trailed 24-17 but scored four straight to make it 24-21. PU called their final timeout of the frame. The Boilermakers would close out the set, 25-21, to tie up the match at 2-2.

SET 5 | The Gophers came out hot in set five, scoring the first four points before Purdue called timeout. The Gophers would be the first to eight, going up 8-2 after an ace from Gilk before the teams switched sides. PU fought back, cutting the lead to just three at 9-6. A service error helped Minnesota reach 10 first. PU scored the next three after that, forcing Minnesota to call a timeout leading 10-9. A Swenson dump made it 11-9 before two straight PU points tied it up at 11-11. The two teams went back and forth before a Hanson kill put Minnesota up 14-13. PU called timeout at match point. The two teams exchanged points all the way up to 16-16 before PU finished it off with an 18-16 win.

Game Notes
» Minnesota is now 57-37 all-time against Purdue. The Boilermakers have won four straight in the series.
» Today's match was Minnesota's first five-setter this season and first since Nov. 20, 2024 at Wisconsin. Minnesota is 8-8 under Keegan Cook in five set matches.
» The 'U' had 11 aces, their fifth time this year with double digits.
» Lourdes Myers went for nine blocks, tying her season-high.
» Julia Hanson went for 19 kills, her 16th match of the season with 10+. It was her ninth with 15+. She tied her career-high with four aces.
» Kelly Kinney had 11 kills. It was her fifth career 10+ kill match.
» Carly Gilk put down a career-high 15 kills, her fourth match of the season with 10+. She had her first double-double with 10 digs as well.
» Stella Swenson had 45 assists, eight digs and five blocks.
