11 Service Aces Boost No. 14 'U' to Sweep Over OSU

10/12/2025 2:37:00 PM | Volleyball

The 11 aces were a season-best

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball team took down the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon in straight sets. The set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 25-14. The Gophers are now 9-1 at home this season.

Minnesota posted a season-best 11 service aces, getting eight of them from its freshman class. Kelly Kinney posted four of them, a career-best.

"I just listen to what my coaches tell me in practice and that helps me implement it in games," said freshman outside Kelly Kinney. "It helped me become much more consistent than when I was coming into college. The energy from my teammates really helped me every time."

Julia Hanson led Minnesota with 16 kills while Jordan Taylor paced the defense with six blocks. Carly Gilk tallied eight kills and 10 digs.

The Gophers (14-3, 4-2 Big Ten) outhit Buckeyes (3-11, 0-6 Big Ten) .283 to .181 and led in kills (39 to 34). OSU led in blocks (7 to 6) and digs (35 to 33). Minnesota had more aces (11 to 5).

Hannah Jones led Ohio State with 12 kills while Kaia Castle had seven.

How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota started strong, gettting kills on its first five swings to go up 6-4 early. Ohio State would respond with a 7-1 run, however, taking an 11-7 lead. Coach Cook then called timeout to reset his team. The Gophers would fight back, scoring four straight to tie it up at 11. Both teams went back and forth throughout the middle of the set with no team leading by more than two. Tied at 18-18, Minnesota scored three straight, including two blocks from Jordan Taylor, to go up 21-18 and force a Buckeyes timeout. After the break, Minnesota scored the next three to take a 24-18 lead, getting a kill from Taylor and an ace from Swenson. OSU would fight back, tallying four straight, including two aces, to make it 24-22. The Gophers then called their last timeout. A kill from Kinney helped the Gophers seal set one, 25-22.

SET 2 | The Gophers came out hot again in set two, scoring five of the first six before OSU took a timeout. The Gophers would extend their lead to six at 11-5 after a couple kills from Hanson and an ace from Georgia Lee. The Buckeyes would battle back, cutting the deficit to three again at 13-10 after a pair of blocks and kills. Minnesota would go up five again at 17-12 before three straight Buckeyes points made it 17-15, leading to a Minnesota timeout. OSU would race back to tie it at 20-20, the first tie of the frame since 1-1. Two kills from Hanson and an attacking error from OSU gave Minnesota a 23-20 lead, causing a timeout from the visitors. The Gophers would go on to close out the frame, 25-21.

SET 3 | The Gophers scored seven of the first 11, getting two aces from Kinney to start, followed by aces from Gilk and Hanson. OSU would get no closer after that as Minnesota scored eight of the next 13 to take a 15-9 lead heading into the media timeout. The Gophers kept up their momentum, bringing the lead up to seven at 19-12 after kills from Hanson and Myers. OSU burned their last timeout at that point. The visitors would get no closer as Minnesota accelerated to the finish line to win, 25-14.
