All Minnesota Starters Reach Base in 5-3 Loss to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Minnesota got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Golden Gophers fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 5-3 Saturday.
Junior Connor Wietgrefe (1-1) got the ball to start for Minnesota (6-7) and took the loss. The left-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, one earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Freshman Kyle Remington came out of the bullpen to throw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
Sophomore Weber Neels led the way offensively for the Gophers, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Brady Counsell contributed two hits late, including his second home run of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the 'U' scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Neels to get on the board in the fifth inning.
The Bulldogs answered by pushing two more runs across before the Gophers were able to score again. Minnesota picked up a run on Counsell's leadoff home run in the seventh, which tightened the Bulldogs lead to 5-3; however, the Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
