Minnesota had three Academic All-American selections
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Sophia Boman, Khyah Harper, and Elizabeth Overberg have been selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Teams, as announced by the publication on Wednesday.
Boman received first team nods while Harper and Overberg earned spots on the second team. With the honors, this is the first time since 2015 that three Gophers have been awarded in the same year. Notably, only two other University of Minnesota teams have had three or more CSC Academic All-Americans since 2018, (Football - 2018, Men's Track & Field - 2023).
The All-America honor caps off Boman's career as a Gopher. This season, Boman grabbed United Soccer Coaches All-North Region and All-Big Ten First Team honors. The defensive midfielder earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season after scoring the game-winning goal over No. 11 Iowa. Notably, the senior captain finished a brace against South Dakota State and scored the game-tying goal to lead the Gophers past No. 3 seed South Carolina to their first Sweet 16 appearance in 14 years.
After a historic season, the Academic All-America honor is another addition to Harper's resume. Last week, Harper was named a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist. Harper was named 2024 Big Ten Forward of the Year, earning First Team All-Big Ten honors and NCAA Division I Women's All-North Region First Team accolades. She is the first since April Bockin (2018) to earn forward of the year and is the third to earn the honor in Minnesota history.
Overberg is no stranger to success in the classroom and on the field. This is the third season she's earned CSC Academic All-Region honors and the first to be named an Academic All-American. The Ankeny, Iowa native earned the 2024 Big Ten Sportsmanship award for the second season in a row. In 2024, the defender played every minute of every game, logging 1,980 minutes. She assisted Minnesota's backline to seven clean sheets and assisted Harper's first goal against Army on Sept. 5.
