University of Minnesota Athletics partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build affordable housing for those in need within the Twin Cities community.
The Gophers packed up the M.A.G.I.C. bus and drove to the job site for a call time of 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 15. After introductions and safety instructions from site supervisor Zack Zoul, the Gopher athletes broke up into four groups and got to work.
During the lunch break, a short program was held, including remarks from Anne Elliott-Thul, Senior Manager, Volunteer and Donor Development for Twin Cities Habitat and University of Minnesota softball alumna. A previous homeowner of Habitat for Humanity, Juanita, also spoke on the importance of what Gopher athletes' volunteerism meant to her and the need for affordable housing through the Habitat for Humanity organization. Once the program was complete, the Gophers continued work throughout until mid afternoon and depart the job site back to campus.
Attending and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity were the following: women's basketball's Niamya Holloway and Mi'Cole Cayton, wrestling's Jacob Gilva and Keaton Kluever, volleyball's Calissa Minatee, tennis' Zoey Weil, as well as swimming's Rachel Butler. The Gopher track teams had the largest team contingent of Jaydon Antoine, Kion Benjamin, Dalayni Etienne, Lauren Hansen, Alliyah McNeil and Finn Schirmer. Also in attendance was Jen Callinan, director of career services within Golden Gopher Athletics.
