Gophers Outlasted by OSU, 6-2, in Game Two

Brett Bateman led the way with three hits

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Brett Bateman collected three hits, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes 6-2 Saturday.

Sophomore George Klassen (1-4) got the ball to start for Minnesota (6-20, 1-1) and took the loss. Junior Noah DeLuga was a bright spot for the Golden Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit, with two walks and one strikeout.

In addition to his three hits, Bateman had a walk to lead the Golden Gophers. Freshman Sam Hunt went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Rookie Weber Neels also contributed for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
OSU scored the first two runs of the game on three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the second. Minnesota cut into the lead in the third, getting an RBI single from Neels, which scored Bateman from second base to make it 2-1.

Minnesota pushed its second run across on Hunt's one-out RBI double, which evened the score at 2-2 in the fourth. Ohio State then scored four times over the remaining five innings to break the tie and grab the 6-2 win. The Buckeyes tallied two of its runs in the fourth inning off a sac fly and an RBI groundout. OSU put a nail in the coffin with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

GAME NOTES
» Bateman led the Golden Gophers with three of their six hits on the game.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 37 Ohio State hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and five fly balls while striking out four.
» The Golden Gophers drew five walks from Ohio State pitching.
» Minnesota struck out a season-high 17 times on Saturday afternoon.
» Ohio State was led offensively by freshman Henry Kaczmar, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
» Sophomore Gavin Bruni led the Buckeyes pitching staff, throwing six innings of two-run ball.
