Gophers Drop Final Game of Angels College Classic to San Diego

2/16/2020 10:39:00 PM | Baseball

Tempe, Ariz. – The Gopher Baseball program was defeated by San Diego in the third and final game of the Angels College Classic on Sunday evening, 7-3.

For the second game in a row, Minnesota showed late life offensively in the latter innings, but were ultimately unable to put one in the win column.

San Diego scored an early run in the first before putting up back-to-back three spots in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-0 lead. Minnesota starter Patrick Fredrickson surrendered all seven runs against the Gophers in the game (six earned) before being pulled in the fourth for Danny Kapala.

Kapala delivered 1 2/3 scoreless frames for the U upon entry, allowing just one hit and needing just 21 pitches. Sunday's outing represented the junior left-hander's first appearance of the season and the eighth of his Gopher career.

The Maroon and Gold trotted out freshman Trent Schoeberl in the sixth, who proved to be the highlight of the day for Minnesota. Making his collegiate debut, Schoeberl tossed three shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Upon Schoeberl's entry to the game, the Minnesota bats began to step up. The Gophers scored their first run on a Chase Stanke sacrifice fly to right field, plating the ever-present Zack Raabe from third.

In the eighth, Raabe led off with a deep double to straightaway centerfield that landed on the warning track and kicked off the wall. Raabe would end up scoring on a throwing error by the Torero catcher, who skipped the ball into left field trying to pick the Gopher second baseman off at third.

Minnesota continued to claw back in the ninth, with Max Meyer doubling to right and later coming around to score on an Andrew Wilhite laser to center. The comeback attempt ended there, however, with San Diego using a two-out punch-out to close the door on the game.

Meyer, Wilhite, and Jack Kelly were the lone Gophers with multiple hits in the contest, each with two knocks apiece.

Fredrickson received the loss against the Toreros, pitching 3 1/3 innings with seven runs (six earned), seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Carter Rustad earned the victory for San Diego, lasting five innings along with two hits, two walks and four strikeouts to his credit.

Quotable
"You have to look at the big picture," said head coach John Anderson. "I'm happy with where we're at. I think we're learning things about this team and they're learning things about themselves. It's a long, long year and we're going to keep preparing every day and try to get better."

"With their approach, you have to get inside. They're a good hitting team," said Schoeberl. "Hopefully tomorrow we can come back out on top, but it was good to get the first couple innings under my belt."

Notable
Schoeberl made his college debut in the loss, firing three shutout innings with just one hit allowed and the first two strikeouts of his Gopher career.

Up Next
