Winston DeLattiboudere has been named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list, the committee announced Wednesday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
DeLattiboudere, a three year starter at defensive end, is passionate about community service. In less than a year span, he put in over 65 documented hours of community service in local schools around the metro area. He frequently visits elementary or middle schools where he speaks and leads reading and game sessions. The 65 hours doesn't even count his routine visits to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital and other one-off opportunities that DeLattiboudere participates in.
One thing that DeLattiboudere is most excited for as he enters his senior season is a school supply project that he will be putting on to send school supplies to a primary school in Jamaica and Hmong International in Minneapolis. DeLattiboudere has family connections in Clarendon, Jamaica and still has cousins at the school he plans to send supplies to.
The Baltimore, Md. native is well respected by his teammates. He was voted the winner of the "Changing the Narrative Award" presented by Rachel Baribeau last fall. He won the honor in a landslide vote by his fellow Gophers.
The redshirt senior already has his undergraduate degree and is enrolled in a graduate program in Youth Development Leadership where he currently has a GPA of 3.933. He has played in every game (38) for the Gophers in the past three seasons. He has has recorded 53 career tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
