COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ben Meyers sent the Gopher Hockey program into the winter break on a high note on Saturday night, picking up the Big Ten bonus point with a goal in 3-on-3 overtime as Minnesota officially tied No. 7/8 Ohio State 1-1.
After falling to the Buckeyes in overtime on Friday night, 65 minutes proved to be insufficient in the series finale. After a fortuitous turnover by Ohio State in the neutral zone, Meyers rushed in all alone for the deciding goal in the 3-on-3 overtime session to end the game at 1:34 on an unassisted tally.
Minnesota (5-9-4 overall, 2-4-4-3 Big Ten) jumped out to an early lead when Jonny Sorenson scored his fourth goal of the year at 17:37 of the first period. Sammy Walker and Jack Perbix picked up assists as Walker has now tallied a point in three-straight games and moved into a tie for the team lead with 11 points this season.
Ohio State (10-4-2, 6-3-1-0) answered back quickly with a goal at 19:11 from Gustaf Westlund.
The next 46 minutes of play was a scoreless battle before Meyers locked up the Big Ten bonus point for the Maroon & Gold.
Jack LaFontaine officially made 29 saves on 30 shots to move to 2-5-3 on the year while Tommy Nappier made 33 saves to move to 8-4-2.
The Minnesota penalty kill went 3-for-3 on the night, holding an opponent's power play off the scoresheet for the third-straight game while the Gophers have allowed just one power-play goal over the last five games on 16 chances. The Maroon & Gold power play was unsuccessful for the first time in five games after being held without a goal on five chances tonight.
The Gophers officially outshot Ohio State 34-30 on the night. Stats from the 3-on-3 overtime session do not count towards season totals.
