ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the third-straight Big Ten Conference game, the Gopher Hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in their Friday night series opener against No. 15 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena.
The Wolverines claimed an additional Big Ten point by scoring with 12.1 seconds left in the 3-on-3 double overtime period. Josh Norris caught a puck on a breakaway and skated in unopposed on the open ice to give Michigan (6-6-4, 2-3-4-2) the bonus in the standings.
The Wolverines got on the board first when Will Lockwood ripped a shot from the top of the circle for his fifth of the year, assisted by Norris and Quinn Hughes, at 6:55 of the first period. Michigan gave the Maroon & Gold a pair of power play chances, one late in the first and the other just 0:34 into the second, but Minnesota (4-6-4, 2-2-3-0 B1G) could not capitalize on either opportunity.
Later in the period, the Gophers took advantage of a loose puck when Nathan Burke's shot slipped just through the pads of Wolverines net minder Strauss Mann, and Sammy Walker knocked it in for his fourth goal of the season at 11:46 of the second. Minnesota staked a lead just moments later as Rem Pitlick knocked home a one-time pass from Jack Sadek, giving the Gophers a 2-1 lead at 13:27 in period two. Tyler Sheehy also earned an assist on Pitlick's seventh of the season.
Michigan would even things up once again before the period was through as Luke Morgan knocked in his second of the year at 17:06, assisted by Michael Pastujov. The two teams went to the locker room for the second intermission even at two with 18 shots each.
The Wolverines pelted Mat Robson with 18 shots in the third period, but the Minnesota goaltender continued his stellar play between the pipes to send the game to overtime. Robson finished with 38 saves during the game, stopping two more pucks in the 3-on-3 session. Mann hauled in 26 saves for Michigan.
The Gophers finished 0-for-3 on the power play while holding Michigan scoreless in a pair of chances with the man advantage.
The same two teams will close out the season's first half on Saturday night from Yost. Opening puck drop is set for just after 8 p.m. ET, and the game will be carried on Big Ten Network and the Gopher Radio Network (KLTK AM 1130, FM 103.5).
