Ranta Named to Finland's WJC Preliminary Roster

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota rookie forward Sampo Ranta was named to Finland's preliminary roster for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship on Monday.
A native of Naantali, Finland, Ranta has six points (three goals, three assists) in 13 games this season – his first with the Maroon & Gold. The forward previously helped Finland capture a gold medal at the 2018 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Russia. Ranta was selected in the third round (78th overall) of the 2018 NHL Entry draft by the Colorado Avalanche.
Ranta would be the second Gopher Hockey player to skate for Finland at the World Junior Championship after Erik Haula in 2011. The University of Minnesota has been represented at 40 of 42 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Finland will play training games against Denmark and Canada on Dec. 19 and 23, respectively, in Victoria, British Columbia, before naming its final roster Dec. 24. Canada will host the upcoming World Junior Championship from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6 in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
