With a power-play goal, an penalty shot goal and an empty-net goal, Lettieri closed out the night with 11 goals on the year - a new career high for the native of Excelsior, Minn. Ryan Collins added his second goal of the year a night after pocketing two assists while Leon Bristedt had two assists for the second night in a row.
For the second consecutive night, the Gophers grabbed a goal in the closing seconds of the first period when Lettieri lit the lamp on the power play at 19:57 off assists from Bristedt and Steve Johnson. The power-play goal would stand as the only special teams tally of the night for either team as Minnesota has now scored a power-play goal in five-straight games while the penalty kill is 22-for-22 over the last six games.
In a second period that saw the Maroon & Gold allow just three shots on goal, the Gophers added another late goal when Collins throttled a one-timer into the net at 19:17 off a setup from Ryan Zuhlsdorf and Tommy Novak. A scrum at the end of the period put Minnesota on the penalty kill to start the third, but Lettieri added his second of the night with a penalty shot strike after being dragged down 39 seconds into the final period. Michigan (8-11-1, 1-5-0-0) didn't go quietly however, bringing the game within a goal with goals from Steven Merl at 8:34 and Evan Allen at 14:22.
Lettieri locked up the win and the hat trick when he found the open net at 19:37 after being set up by Bristedt and Justin Kloos, who has now tallied a point in each of the last six games for Minnesota.
In goal for the Maroon & Gold, Eric Schierhorn moved to 13-5-2 on the season with a win for the Gophers, making 16 saves. The sophomore has held opponents to two goals or less in each game during Minnesota's six-game winning streak.
Shots on Saturday were 28-19 in favor of the home team.
The Maroon & Gold continue the Big Ten campaign next weekend with a two-game series at Wisconsin. Tickets for the 2016-17 season are available at MyGopherSports.com or by calling 1-800-U-Gopher.
