MINNEAPOLIS - Eric Schierhorn picked up his sixth career shutout and team captain Justin Kloos tallied the game's only goal as the No. 7 Gopher Hockey program picked up a 1-0 victory over No. 15 Minnesota State on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena.
In goal, Schierhorn stopped all 23 shots he faced to move to 5-3-2 on the year and earn his third shutout of the season while Kloos' deciding goal stands as his ninth career game-winning score. The victory also moves Minnesota head coach Don Lucia to 699 career wins including 420 at Minnesota - the most in program history.
After a scoreless first, Minnesota came out firing in the second period - scoring an early power-play goal and outshooting the Mavericks 16-3 in the second stanza (tying the season low for shots allowed in a period).
The Gophers (5-3-2 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) took advantage of their first power-play chance, grabbing a 1-0 lead at 2:46 of the second period. In a flurry of attempts to find the back of the net, Kloos finally put the puck home with two seconds left in the advantage for his third goal of the year.
Tyler Sheehy earned the primary assist on the goal for his team-leading 12th point and eighth assist while Mike Szmatula added his seventh assist of the year - extending his point streak to six games.
Minnesota ended the night 1-for-3 on the power play while the penalty kill went 4-for-4.
Kloos' power-play tally proved to be the game's lone goal as Schierhorn kept the door closed on Minnesota State for the entire night including a late barrage in the third period as the Mavericks put 11 shots on goal in the final stanza - the only period that saw the visitors reach double digit shots.
The 60-minute contest ended with Minnesota outshooting its in-state rival 38-23.
The Maroon & Gold return to action next weekend with a Thanksgiving road trip to Boston. Minnesota plays at Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 25 before facing off with Boston College on Sunday, Nov. 27.
