Mike Reilly Named B1G First Star

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey's Mike Reilly has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday, making the First Team All-American the first defenseman in conference history to earn First Star honors.

The Chanhassen, Minn., native led the Big Ten and tied for first nationally with five points (one goal, four assists) over the weekend as Minnesota picked up four of six league points at Michigan State in its first Big Ten series of the year. Reilly matched his career high with three points (one goal, two assists) in the team's 5-0 win on Friday night and added another two assists in Saturday's 3-3 overtime tie.

All four of Reilly's assists on the weekend came on the power play as the Gophers stayed red hot while on the advantage and now boast the nation's top power-play unit at 17-for-50 (.340).

Reilly leads all Big Ten defenseman with 17 points and 14 assists this season and is tied with Kyle Rau for the Gophers' scoring lead.

Michigan's Tyler Motte was named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week while David Glen of Penn State was honored as the Big Ten Third Star of the Week.

Minnesota returns to action in 2015 with the 24th Annual Mariucci Classic on Jan. 2-3. Joining the Gophers in the holiday tournament will be Merrimack, UMass-Lowell and RIT.
