MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Twelve different Gophers tallied points including Leon Bristedt's first collegiate goal while Adam Wilcox backstopped a 20-save shutout on Friday night as the top-ranked Gopher Hockey program blanked No. 14/15 Notre Dame 5-0 in the series opener.
Wilcox now owns sole possession of second place on Minnesota's all-time shutout list with nine career clean sheets (Kellen Briggs holds the school record with 13)and also has sole possession of fifth on the school's all-time wins list with 57 after Friday's victory. The South St. Paul, Minn., native moved to 6-1-0 on the year and picked up his second shutout of the season with Friday's win being highlighted by several key saves during odd-man rushes for the Irish.
Minnesota (6-1-0 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) tallied a season-high 44 shots in the victory and found goals from five different skaters in the win while the nation's top power-play unit went 1-for-4 on the night. The Gopher' penalty kill went 3-for-3 in the win as well.
Justin Kloos put Minnesota up early with his team-leading sixth goal of the year just 2:09 into the contest on Friday on the power play for his fourth goal in two games and his second game winner in as many contests.
The Gophers would add another goal in the second - this one coming off the stick of Swedish import Leon Bristedt for the rookie's first goal as a Gopher at 12:04 of the second stanza.
After pocketing a pair of goals over the first 40 minutes of action, the Gophers blew up for three goals in the third period as Mike Reilly tallied his first of the year at 1:49 followed just 53 seconds later by Sam Warning at 2:42. Ben Marshall buried his first goal of the season to seal the victory for good at 17:51 of the third.
While five different Gophers scored goals, three different Gophers picked up two assists each in the victory with Kyle Rau, Taylor Cammarata and Michael Brodzinski each setting up multiple goals on Friday night.
Notre Dame (5-3-1, 1-0-1 Hockey East) got a 39-save performance from Cal Peterson in net, but the Fighting Irish couldn't find a way past Wilcox all night.
The Maroon & Gold are now unbeaten at home in their last 16 games - the nation's longest active streak. Minnesota and Notre Dame close out this weekend's nonconference series on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4:03 p.m. at Mariucci Arena.
