Having scored two goals in leading Minnesota to a 4-3 road victory over North Dakota on Saturday, Gophers’ freshman forward Mike Hoeffel has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week.

Hoeffel, a North Oaks, Minn. native who attended Hill-Murray School, scored the game’s first goal at 2:37 of the first period and added another goal at 5:45 of the second period to give the Gophers a 3-1 lead. Hoeffel fired five shots on goal in the game.

Hoeffel entered the game with one goal in his first 17 career games. He now has three goals and three assists for six points for the season.

It is the first WCHA weekly award for any Minnesota player this season. The Gophers enter the holiday break with a 9-8-1 overall record and 5-7 mark in the WCHA. Minnesota returns to action when it faces Rochester Institute of Technology on Dec. 29 at Mariucci Arena.
