Gophers Open Home Season with a Sweep

The No. 13 University of Minnesota earned a 3-0 win over Miami in the home opener, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 3-2 on the season and have won two straight. Miami is now 0-6 on the season, facing all Power-4 teams this season. 

Kelly Kinney led the Gophers when she had nine kills, while Mckenna Wucherer and Carly Gilk added eight kills. Wucherer added a career-high six aces. Stella Swenson had 29 assists, while Zeynep Palabiyik had a team-best 10 digs. Jordan Taylor led the team in blocks (4). 

As a team, Minnesota hit a season-best .468 and held Miami to .279. The Gophers and Hurricanes were tied in team digs (34), while Minnesota had a 5-2 advantage in blocks and 9-3 lead in aces.

Minnesota is back in action on Sunday when it hosts St. Thomas at 1 p.m., and streamed on B1G+. 

Match Notes: 
-The Gophers are 45-10 in home openers and have now won, five straight. Their last loss came in 2021 against No. 1 Texas (3-1). 
-It was the second time in school history the Gophers played Miami and now 2-0 all-time against the Hurricanes and the first meeting against the two teams since 1981. 
-The win over the Hurricanes was the second three-set sweep over an opponent this season.
-The last time the Gophers hit over .400 in a match dates back to last season when it hit .412 against Indiana on Oct. 24, 2025.
-Wucherer has now had 10 aces in the past two matches. She set a career-best four against Auburn and bettered that total tonight with six.  

Set Breakdown: 
Set 1: The Gophers hit .500 in the first set for a 25-15 set win. Minnesota opened the first set with a 13-8 lead off a pair of Miami errors as the Hurricanes called a timeout. The Gophers, however, added to the lead at 16-8 off a Gilk kill. Wucherer pushed the score to 21-12 on a kill off a Miami block touch. The Hurricanes called their second timeout as the Gophers led 22-13 as they committed an attack error. The Gophers would close out the set off a Jordan Taylor slide for the 23rd point, a Miami attack error for set point, while Kinney added her third kill of the set to put Minnesota up, 1-0. 

Set 2: Minnesota took a 25-16 set win. The Gophers erased a 6-3 Miami lead to string together three straight to tie the set at 6-6 off a Wucherer kill. Gilk tied the set at 10-10 on a shot down the line. Tied at 14, the Gophers took the lead for good at 15-14 off a Miami attack error and strung together a 6-0 run off Wucherer's serve rotation to take a 20-14 lead. The Gophers closed out the set on a 5-0 run, including a block by Kinney and Taylor for set point and a 2-0 match lead. 

Set 3: The Gophers closed out the match with a 25-14 set win. Minnesota held the lead from the 2-1 point and cruised to a third set win. Kinney added back-to-back kills, while Gilk provided her sixth kill of the match to take a 15-8 lead as Miami called a timeout. The Gophers later pushed the lead to 18-10 off a Wucherer kill. She delivered back-to-back aces for the second time in the match as the Gophers took a 22-13 lead as Miami called a timeout.
