Gophers Sweep No. 13 Creighton

The No. 14 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over No. 13 Creighton today as part of the State Farm Volleyball Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D. Minnesota won 25-18, 25-23, 25-12 and earned its first win of the season. Minnesota and Creighton are both 1-1 on the season.
Mckenna Wucherer led the Gophers with 10 kills, followed by Elena Hoecke with a career-high seven kills and five blocks in her young Gopher career. She also hit.500 in her first career start. Kelly Kinney also had seven kills, as Carly Gilk provided five. Stella Swenson had 29 assists, four aces and seven digs. Zeynep Palabiyik had a match-best 13 digs.
As a team, Minnesota hit .298 and limited Creighton to .068. The Gophers held an 8-4 advantage in blocks and a 39-34 lead in digs. Minnesota also had 10 aces to Creighton's six.
Next Up:
Minnesota faces No. 17 Florida on Tuesday, Sept. 1, then takes on Auburn on Sept. 2. Both matches are part of the Big Ten/SEC Challenge in Madison, Wis., with host Wisconsin. Minnesota's match against the Gators is set for 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network, while the Auburn match will be shown at 5 p.m. on FS1.

"We've had our battles not go our way against those guys the last couple of years. It was nice to see a good response from the team. I thought we played a high-level match last night against a great team that played really well. I thought that if we could match that performance, we would have a good chance to win. I'm really happy with how we responded."

Set 1: Minnesota earned a 25-18 win after coming back from a slow start. Creighton jumped out to a 4-0 lead, which forced Minnesota to call an early timeout. Minnesota responded and took an 8-7 lead off a block from Hoecke and Swenson. The teams traded points until Minnesota went on a 3-0 run and took a 16-13 lead when Gilk tooled the Creighton block attempt. Creighton called a timeout as the Gophers took an 18-14 lead off a Bluejay attack error. A kill by Hoecke pushed the Gopher lead to 21-15, while Swenson sealed the first-set win off an ace.
