Gophers End Season At College Basketball Crown

4/2/2026 1:07:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Cade Tyson had 19 points and seven rebounds and Langston Reynolds had 13 points, but Baylor (17-16) opened the second half with a 17-1 run to pull away from Minnesota (15-18) and advance to the semifinals of the College Basketball Crown with a 67-48 win at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Minnesota, playing for the first time since March 11, led 18-16 midway through the first half, but the Bears outscored the Gophers 15-8 to lead by five at the half, and then broke things open with the big run to start the second half.

Tyson, an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and NABC Second Team All-District selection, had one of the most prolific seasons in school history in his one season with the Gophers. He led Minnesota in points (628), points per game (19.6), field goals (191), free throws (175) and free throw attempts (213) this season. Tyson's 628 points rank third in school history for points in a season. Tyson scored 20-plus points 15 times this season, including two games with more than 30 points, while scoring in double-figures in each of his 32 games played. He also tied a school record with eight three-pointers against Texas Southern on Dec. 14.

In addition to Tyson and Reynolds, Bobby Durkin had six points and seven rebounds, Isaac Asuma had four points, Grayson Grove had two points and five boards, Kai Shinholster had two points and three rebounds, and Maximus Gizzi had two points.

Minnesota jumped to a 5-3 lead on a layup by Reynolds and a three-pointer from Tyson, but the Bears responded with a 9-2 run to lead 12-7 at the first media timeout with 14:10 left. An 11-4 Gophers run put Minnesota back in front, 18-16, on a three-pointer by Durkin with 10:54 remaining. Tyson and Asuma each scored four points during that stretch, Baylor bounced back with a 4-0 run to end a three-plus minute scoring drought, taking a 20-18 lead at the third media timeout, as Minnesota went scoreless for three minutes.

The Bears extended their run to 8-0 for a 24-18 lead until Reynolds cut the lead to five with a free throw at the 6:16 mark. Baylor's lead reached 27-19 on Agbim's third three-pointer of the half, and Reynolds pulled the Gophers within seven by going1-of-2 at the line. Minnesota trimmed the deficit to 29-24 on a pair of free throws by Tyson and a layup by Grove, the Gophers' first field goal in more than eight minutes. A Tyson layup pulled Minnesota within three points, but the Bears added a putback off an offensive rebound to lead 31-26 at the half.

Tyson led Minnesota with 13 first-half points and was tied with Grove with a team-high four rebounds, while Asuma and Reynolds each had four points. As a team, Minnesota made 10-of-23 (.435) field goals in the first half, including 2-of-11 (.182) three-pointers, and 4-of-6 free throws, while being outrebounded, 19-14. Agbim led the Bears with nine points.

Baylor opened the second half with a 6-0 run to extend its advantage to 37-26, and Niko Medved called a timeout with 18:11 remaining. Reynolds made a free throw to cut the lead to 10, but the Bears extended their run to 17-1 and led 48-27 before Durkin's second trey of the game at the 13:58 mark. A 12-4 Minnesota run cut the lead to 54-42 with 8:11 left, with Tyson and Reynolds each scoring six points during the stretch.

The Bears expanded the lead back to 63-44 before Shinholster's layup with 3:16 left, and Gizzi scored his first Division I points to close out the scoring with less than a minute left.

Baylor advances to face Oklahoma in a semifinal on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.
