Gopher Rally Comes Up Short at Penn State

2/1/2026 3:43:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Langston Reynolds had 18 points and seven assists, Cade Tyson scored 17 points, and Bobby Durkin made four three-pointers and scored 16 points, as Minnesota (10-12, 3-8) rallied from a 13-point deficit to tie the score in the final minute, but Penn State (10-12, 1-10) scored on a Kayden Mingo layup with 0:01 remaining to escape with a 77-75 win at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Minnesota trailed by 10 points with less than four minutes remaining, but a 9-0 run pulled the Gophers within a point with 2:31 remaining, and a Reynolds free throw tied the score with 0:31 left. But the Nittany Lions ran down the clock and Mingo's layup from the left side rolled in with one tick left to hand the Gophers their seventh straight loss.

Reynolds scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the second half, and he also led the team with seven assists. Tyson, who returned from an ankle injury, went 11-of-12 at the free throw line to finish with 17 points and five rebounds. Durkin was 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, to finish with 16 points, and Isaac Asuma had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson finished with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Grayson Grove added four points, four boards, and a career-high four blocked shots.

As a team, Minnesota made 27-of-51 (.529) field goals, including 7-of-27 (.259) three-pointers, and 14-of-17 (.824) free throws. The Gophers were 16-of-24 (.667) in the second half. Penn State held a slim 29-28 edge in rebounds, and a 40-38 edge in paint points.

Freddie Dilione led all scorers with 25 points, while Josh Reed added 18 points, Mingo finished with 14, and Dominick Stewart had 12 for the Nittany Lions. Penn State made 31-of-62 (.500) field goals, including 7-of-18 (.389) from distance, and 8-of-9 (.889) free throws.

Minnesota trailed 9-7 at the first media timeout with 15:18 left in the half, with Tyson scoring the first three points for the Gophers and Asuma and Crocker-Johnson adding layups. Tyson scored on a layup to cut it to 11-9, but the Nittany Lions extended the lead to 15-9 before Durkin cut through the lane for a layup and then knocked down a three-pointer to pull the Gophers within one point with 11:57 remaining. Penn State countered with a pair of layups to expand the lead to 19-14, and Niko Medved called timeout with 10:44 left.

PSU's run reached 6-0 for a 21-14 lead, but Tyson made a pair at the line to cut it to a five-point game. Dilione made a three-pointer to extend the Nits' advantage to eight points, but Durkin answered with his second trey of the half for a 24-19 game. A 7-0 Nittany Lions run put them in front 31-19 before Durkin scored on a layup to reach double-figures and Tyson made a pair at the line to pull Minnesota within eight. Penn State responded with a 5-0 spurt to take its largest lead at 36-23 with 3:21 remaining, but Reynolds made back-to-back three-pointers from in front of the PSU bench to trim it to 36-29. Another 5-0 PSU run put the Nittany Lions up by 12, but Asuma scored on a layup to send the teams to their locker rooms with Penn State leading 41-31.

Durkin paced the Gophers with 10 first-half points, with Tyson adding nine points, and Reynolds with six. As a team, Minnesota made 11-of-27 (.407) field goals, 4-of-18 (.222) three-pointers, and 5-of-6 (.833) free throws. PSU had a 17-15 edge in rebounds, and outscored Minnesota 18-14 in the paint. Reed led Penn State with 16 points at the break, with Dilione adding 13. The Nittany Lions made 15-of-31 (.484) field goals, including 5-of-12 (.417) from beyond the arc, and 6-of-6 at the line.

Tyson and Crocker-Johnson scored to pull Minnesota within eight points to start the second half, but Penn State stretched the lead to 50-39 with 15:23 left. The Gophers responded with a 12-5 run, including seven points from Asuma and Durkin's third three-pointer to pull within 55-51 with 11:36 remaining. Grove threw down a dunk to cut it to a two-point game, and a driving layup by Reynolds made it 57-55. A three-point play by Mingo put the Nittany Lions up by five, and Durkin connected on a corner three to cut it to 60-58, but Mingo made a deep three-pointer and Stewart added a layup for a 65-58 lead with 8:09 remaining.

The Nittany Lions made it a 9-0 run to retake an 11-point lead at 69-58 with 6:31 left, but Tyson hit a pair of free throws and Asuma added another to cut it to 69-61. Penn State led 71-61 at the final media timeout, but Tyson made two free throws, Reynolds converted on a three-point play, and Grove added a layup to pull the Gophers within 71-68 and force a PSU timeout with 2:40 remaining.

Tyson went back to the line and added two more free throws to cut it to 71-70 with 2:31 left, and a Reynolds layup kept the Gophers within one with 1:54 on the clock. Mingo scored to push PSU's lead to 75-72, but Crocker-Johnson's layup with 38.1 seconds left once again trimmed the lead to one. The Gophers came up with a steal, and Reynolds was fouled on a layup attempt. He made one of two at the line to tie the score, but Mingo's layup with one second left sealed the win for the Nittany Lions.
