Gophers Fall to No. 7 Nebraska

1/24/2026 1:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Bobby Durkin scored 16 points, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Cade Tyson added 12 points and five rebounds, as Minnesota led No. 7 Nebraska 36-30 at halftime, but Pryce Sandfort scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to help the Huskers (20-0, 9-0) rally for a 76-57 win over the Gophers (10-10, 3-6 B1G) at Williams Arena.

Minnesota, which was looking for its third home win against a nationally-ranked opponent this season, led 40-32 early in the second half, but a 21-4 Huskers run put Nebraska up 53-44 with 10:00 remaining. The Gophers pulled within 53-48, but a 14-0 run by the visitors sealed the victory and allowed them to remain undefeated.

Durkin made 6-of-13 field goals to lead Minnesota in scoring, and Crocker-Johnson made four three-pointers in the first half to help the Gophers build the six-point halftime lead. But after going 9-of-20 from behind the three-point arc in the first half, Minnesota was 0-of-11 in the second half as the Huskers rallied. As a team, the Gophers made 21-of-53 (.396) field goals, including 9-of-31 (.290) three-pointers, and 6-of-12 free throws.

Tyson reached double-figures for the 20th time, Kai Shinholster finished with a career-high eight points and four assists, Langston Reynolds had seven points to go with five rebounds and three assists, Isaac Asuma had four rebounds and four assists, and Grayson Grove had two points.

Sandfort's 22 points led the Huskers, while adding 10 rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and a pair of steals, and Jamarques Lawrence and Sam Hoiberg each added 14 points for Nebraska. The Huskers made 29-of-61 (.475) field goals, including 9-of-28 three-pointers, and 9-of-9 free throws, while winning the rebounding battle, 39-31.

Minnesota trailed 9-8 at the first media timeout with 15:59 left, as Durkin had the team's first five points including a three-pointer on the opening possession and Crocker-Johnson hit a three to trim a 9-5 deficit to one point. Asuma had to exit the game early with two fouls. Hoiberg's second three-pointer of the game made it 12-8, and the Huskers extended the lead to six points, but Durkin and Shinholster made layups and Tyson hit a three-pointer to pull within 18-15 with 11:50 left. A pair of Durkin free throws with 9:24 left pulled the Gophers within one, but Mast provided the first points for the Huskers in more than three minutes for a 20-17 lead.

The Huskers extended their lead to 22-18, but Minnesota answered with a 9-2 run over a two-minute, six-second span, as Shinholster, Crocker-Johnson, and Tyson each hit three-pointers to put the Gophers up 27-24 with 4:04 left. Crocker-Johnson extended the run to 12-2 with his third three-pointer of the first half, and his fourth trey made it 33-26 with 2:44 left. A 4-0 Huskers run cut Minnesota's lead to 33-30, but Durkin's three-pointer with 0:40 remaining made it a 36-30 halftime lead for the Gophers.

Crocker-Johnson and Durkin each had 12 first-half points to lead the Gophers, while Tyson added six points and four rebounds, and Shinholster had five points. Minnesota made 12-of-29 (.414) field goals, including 9-of-20 (.450) three-pointers, and 3-of-5 free throws. Hoiberg led the Huskers with 14 points. Nebraska made 13-of-31 (.419) field goals, but just 2-of-11 (.182) three-pointers, and 2-of-2 free throws, while holding a slim 19-18 edge in rebounding. The Gophers closed the half with an 18-8 run over the final 6:10 for the six-point halftime lead, just the fifth time Nebraska has trailed after 20 minutes this season.

Tyson scored in the lane to make it 38-30, and a layup from Reynolds made it 40-32, but each missed free throws which would have given them a three-point play, and the Huskers answered with a 9-2 run to trim the lead to 42-41 with 14:50 remaining. Nebraska reclaimed the lead on a three-pointer with 13:37 remaining, and its run reached 14-2 for a 46-42 lead at the second media timeout with 11:29 left. Tyson scored in the lane to pull Minnesota within 48-44, but a 5-0 Huskers run (21-4 extended) made it 53-44 and forced Niko Medved to call a timeout with 10:00 remaining.

Reynolds made a pair of foul shots and Grove scored on a layup to trim the deficit to 53-48, but Sandfort's second three-pointer of the half put Nebraska up eight with 8:33 remaining. The Huskers added three free throws, a pair of three-pointers, and two more at the line for a 14-0 run and a 67-48 lead with 5:51 left. Shinholster ended a four-minute drought with a free throw and Reynolds and Durkin scored on layups to cut it to 67-53, but Sandfort's layup with 3:28 left increased the lead back to 16. Reynolds' layup put him over 1,000 points for his career. Shinholster drove the lane for a layup to reach a career-high eight points, and Durkin closed the scoring for the Gophers with a layup.

Minnesota travels to Madison, Wis., to face Wisconsin on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Tipoff at the Kohl Center is set for 8:00 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
