McEnelly Set to Compete at U20 World Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - Max McEnelly will represent the University of Minnesota and Team USA on the international stage this week as he competes at the U20 World Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.
While the Championships start Sunday, McEnelly will first compete on Tuesday at 86kg. The qualification rounds start at 2 a.m. CT with the semifinals set for 8:45 a.m. Should McEnelly advance to Wednesday, repechage would begin at 2 a.m., while the finals are scheduled for 10 a.m.

McEnelly earned his spot on Team USA with a title at the World Team Trials in June. He advanced directly to the best-of-three championship series as a result of winning the U.S. Open title in May. McEnelly faced Aeoden Sinclair of Tiger Style Wrestling Club once again at the Team Trials, the same opponent he beat in the U.S. Open with a last-second takedown.
Sinclair won the first match by a 10-2 decision, but McEnelly bounced back with a 6-5 victory to force a winner-take-all bout. Like at the U.S. Open, this one also came down to the wire as McEnelly used a takedown with 26 seconds to prevail 3-2 and claim his spot.
McEnelly is coming off a redshirt freshman season that saw him finish third in the country at 184 pounds with a 25-2 record. The reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, he was also a finalist at the Big Ten Championships. McEnelly tied for third in the nation in tech fall wins (13) and led Minnesota in tech fall wins, bonus point victories (18) and dual wins (12). He also tied for the team lead in dual win percentage (1.000, 12-0), Big Ten dual wins (8) and. Big Ten dual win percentage (1.000, 8-0).
In addition, he was second on the roster in bonus point rate (.704), ranked wins (13), win percentage vs. ranked opponents (.867, 13-2), dual team points scored (51), Big Ten dual team points scored (33) and major decisions (6).
Off the mat, McEnelly was named a CSC Academic All-District Selection, an NWCA Scholar All-American and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.
