Four-year Gopher heads to pro hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - After playing four years on the Minnesota men's hockey team, Aaron Huglen signed his first professional contract Monday to join the American Hockey League's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The two-year deal as a free agent begins next season and will run for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 campaigns.

Originally drafted No. 102 overall in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Huglen appeared in 150 career games with the Golden Gophers. He totaled 73 points on 32 goals and 41 assists, reaching double-digit points in all four seasons. He registered a career-best 13 goals and 21 points during his junior campaign and set a career high of 14 assists this season. Huglen was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team three times while playing for the Maroon and Gold and earned Minnesota's Donald W. Clark Community Service Award a year ago before being honored with the B1G Sportsmanship Award in 2024-25.

The native of Roseau, Minn., served as an alternate captain for the Gophers this season and helped the team win their third regular season B1G title and reach a fourth-straight NCAA Tournament since he stepped foot on campus. Minnesota held a record of 13-2-1 when Huglen reached the scoresheet this year as he tallied five goals and 14 assists for 19 points. The center also paced the team by winning 52.9 percent of faceoffs in 2024-25 and won 274 draws overall.
