MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota tennis junior Aiva Schmitz has been named one of 18 Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award honorees for the first time in her career. The Sportsmanship Award is given to student-athletes with distinguished sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academic standing, and good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Schmitz was named team captain for the 2024-25 season, her third season in the program. As the longest-tenured Gopher on this year's squad, her leadership and experience have played a vital role in the team's success on and off the court, as well as in the program's development under second-year head coach Lois Arterberry.
Since making her official match debut during the fall 2022 season, Schmitz has recorded 51 singles wins and 32 doubles victories in her career. The New Auburn, Wisconsin, native holds a team-best career win percentage of 58%. She was named to the Preseason Big Ten Players to Watch list ahead of the 2025 spring season. Schmitz primarily competed at the No. 1 singles spot all season, earning notable wins over second-team All-Big Ten selection McKenna Schaefbauer and first-team All-Mountain West honoree Zdena Safarova.
