Blue liner signs pro agreement with Hershey

MINNEAPOLIS - Ryan Chesley, a captain for the Golden Gophers men's hockey team, reached a tryout agreement with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League Wednesday and will forego his final collegiate season at Minnesota. He will spend the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign with the Bears before signing his entry-level contract with the NHL's Washington Capitals at a later date.

The 37th overall pick in the second round by the Capitals in 2022, Chesley skated in 115 games with the Maroon and Gold across three seasons. He compiled 38 points on 12 goals and 26 assists to go with a plus-34 rating and 202 blocked shots for his career. The junior earned a second-consecutive postseason honor from the Big Ten Conference with an honorable mention team nod this year following All-B1G Second Team honors as a sophomore.

Chesley set a career-high goal output in 2024-25, potting four in the first month on his way to eight this season, including game-winning goals at home against Mercyhurst and Ohio State. He ranked 14th among NCAA defensemen in goals and surpassed his point total from his first two college seasons combined with 20 for the year thanks to four multi-point performances. He buried the first shorthanded goal of his career at Wisconsin and tallied a career-high three points in a home win over Mercyhurst.
