MINNEAPOLIS – Gopher wrestling has added 2024 All-American and Minnesota native Jore (JOR-ee) Volk to its roster, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Thursday.

Hailing from Lakeville, Volk spent the past three seasons at Wyoming where he was a Big 12 champion and two-time qualifier to the NCAA Championships at 125 pounds. He finished with a record of 53-19 for the Cowboys.

"Our staff is excited to welcome Jore Volk back home to Minnesota," Eggum said. "He's an All-American with the drive, discipline and mentality that aligns perfectly with our program. Jore has big goals for his athletic career, and we feel Minnesota is the best place for him to accomplish them. His return is a big addition for Minnesota Wrestling, and we are excited about the future of our program."

Volk was limited to just four matches this past season, going 2-2. In January, he announced that he would be sitting out the remainder of the season due to injury and would seek a medical redshirt.

The year prior in 2024, Volk broke through to earn All-America honors for the first time in his career as he compiled a record of 27-8, including a 15-8 mark against ranked opponents. He piled up a team-high 46 takedowns, six technical falls and was a team-best 8-3 in duals.

Volk earned All-American status as he finished seventh at the 2024 NCAA Championships. After dropping his opening match as the No. 5 seed, Volk followed with four straight wins over the No. 21 seed (Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor), the No. 11 seed (current Gopher Cooper Flynn, who was then at Virginia Tech), the No. 14 seed (Stanford's Nico Provo) and the No. 1 seed (Penn State's Braeden Davis). Volk then beat South Dakota State's No. 23 Tanner Jordan in the seventh-place match.

Volk's Blood Round matchup was a 4-1, overtime victory over Davis, which marked the second time he defeated the No. 1 ranked wrestler during the season. He also accomplished that feat at the Reno Tournament of Champions when he beat Arizona State's Richard Figueroa. As a result, Volk won the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the event and was honored as the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week.

Volk reached the NCAAs after winning the 2024 Big 12 title. Seeded fifth, he beat the No. 4 seed Jordan, the No. 1 seed (Missouri's Noah Surtin) and the No. 2 seed (Oklahoma State's Troy Spratley).

Volk had a breakout true freshman season in 2022-23, recording 21 wins and qualifying for the NCAA Championships as the No. 21 seed. He went 1-2 in his first appearance at the Championships, picking up a 3-1 upset victory over Michigan's No. 12 Michael DeAugustino. Volk also finished fifth at the Big 12 Tournament, earning automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships.

He picked up his first career ranked win with an 11-1 major decision upset over then-No. 12 Surtin. Volk tallied five ranked wins on the season, including three top-20 triumphs. He won the Western Colorado Open, posting a 3-0 record with two bonus-point wins, and finished third at the Cowboy Open, Reno Tournament of Champions and Soldier Salute.

Prior to Wyoming, Volk was a four-time state finalist and a three-time state champion while competing at Lakeville North High school. He was tabbed as the 48th ranked prospect in the country. On the national scene, he won the 2022 U20 Freestyle World Team Trials, earning a spot on the U20 Freestyle World Team. He was also a 2019 USAW Cadet National Champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Volk finished fourth in a highly competitive field at the 2021 Super 32 Tournament.
