Wells Grabs At-Large Bid to NCAA Championships

3/11/2025 2:24:00 PM | Wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota's Tyler Wells was one of 46 at-large selections the NCAA announced Tuesday for next week's 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, Pa.

Wells joins the eight members of the team who automatically qualified for the national tournament at last weekend's Big Ten Championships. Minnesota is one of 11 programs in the country to have at least nine qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. It's the 20th time in program history the Gophers have sent nine or more to NCAAs, including each of the last five seasons.

It'll be the second trip to the NCAA championships for Wells, who is looking to build on his success from a year ago when he reached the 133-pound blood round. This year, Wells has gone 11-8, including a 5-4 dual record and 1-4 conference mark. He did not place at the Big Tens as the 10th seed, but did post four ranked wins this season, highlighted by a win over then-No. 8 and current No. 4 Connor McGonagle of Virginia Tech in the Mountaineer Invite finals.

The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, ratings percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish.

Seedings and brackets for the 2025 NCAA Championships will be announced Wednesday night at 7 p.m. CT on NCAA.com, while the Championships are scheduled to take place March 20-22 inside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
