The loss was Minnesota's first of the 2025 season
EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â No. 16 Minnesota dropped its first meet of the season with a 197.475-196.800 defeat to No. 5 Michigan State. It was the two teams' first meeting since MSU took home the 2024 Big Ten Championships by just .100.
"It was a great meet," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "Michigan State was the strongest opponent we've competed against yet and it was a really good test for us. The team was excited and ready to go and I'm really proud of our effort. We also know we have more in the tank that we have to reach to achieve our goals this season."Â
The Gophers (5-1, 3-1 B1G) earned 49.050 on vault, 49.250 on bars, 49.200 on beam and 49.300 on floor. Michigan State (6-2, 3-1 B1G) went 49.425 on vault, 49.400 on bars, 49.275 on beam and 49.375 on the floor.
MSU's Sage Kellerman and Gabrielle Stephens won the vault title with 9.900 scores while Kellerman and Nikki Smith won on bars with 9.925s. The Spartans' Skyla Schulte (9.925) took home the beam title and tied with Mya Hooten for the floor title with another 9.925.
The Gophers started out the meet on bars, getting stellar performances from Hooten, Jordyn Lyden and Ava Stewart with 9.900s. Coach Hansen was thrilled with how they finished off the first rotation.
"Seeing those high scores back-to-back-to-back was awesome. Bars is an event we've gotten better at each week and we know that can take us far once we get to the postseason."
