Minnesota Comes Up Short Against No. 7 Maryland 100-99 in Double Overtime

Grace Grocholski had 31 points

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (6-3, 0-1 Big Ten) fell to the Maryland Terrapins (11-0, 1-0 Big Ten) 100-99 in two overtimes at home Sunday.

The Golden Gophers had five players score in double figures, led by Grace Grocholski, who had 31 points and six assists. Tori McKinney tacked on 19 points and two steals and Mara Braun chipped in as well with 16 points, two steals and two blocks. Amaya Battle had a double-double, scoring 13 points and collecting 12 rebounds while Brylee Glenn added on 11 points, three steals, and two blocks.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-5, Minnesota went on a 6-0 run with 6:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Glenn, to narrow its deficit to 12-11. The Gophers deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 15-14.

Maryland kept adding to that lead, building a 22-20 advantage before Minnesota went on a 17-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Glenn, to take a 37-22 lead. The Terrapins cut into that lead, but the Gophers still enjoyed a 38-24 advantage heading into halftime. Minnesota dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 24 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Minnesota held on to its advantage and owned a 48-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Minnesota knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.

Minnesota then surrendered that advantage as Maryland forced overtime by tying things up at 70-70 by the end of the fourth. Minnesota fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 22 points.

Minnesota grabbed a 90-88 lead with 2:15 left in the second overtime before going on a 7-0 run to grow its advantage to 97-88 with 1:06 to go in the period. Maryland then asserted control, outscoring the Gophers 12-2 the rest of the way to hand Minnesota the 100-99 loss.
