No. 18 'U' Drops Season Finale to No. 10 Badgers

11/28/2025 9:50:00 PM | Volleyball

Minnesota finishes the season 22-9 (12-8 Big Ten)

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 18 Minnesota volleyball team fell to the No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers in three sets on Friday evening at Maturi Pavilion to end their regular season. The set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-17.

Entering the postseason, Minnesota holds a 22-9, 12-8 Big Ten record and has an excellent chance to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament next weekend.

"The result wasn't what we wanted tonight but I thought we still battled hard," said redshirt senior Lauren Crowl. "We're going to get right back in the gym to practice later this week. We need to stay committed to our team and our values and I think we have a lot of good volleyball left in us this season."

Kelly Kinney had seven kills to lead Minnesota while Julia Hanson had six. Lourdes Myers had a team-high five blocks and McKenna Garr went for 15 digs.

The Gophers (22-9, 12-8 Big Ten) were outhit by the Badgers (24-4,17-3 Big Ten) .385 to .132. UW had more kills (52 to 26) and aces (8 to 3) while Minnesota had more digs (46 to 44). The two teams had six blocks each.

For Wisconsin Mimi Colyer had 13 kills while Una Vajagic had 12. Charlie Fuerbringer went for 39 assists and six digs.

"The fans at the Pav are amazing and it's something I'm really going to miss," said Crowl. "Our fans bring so much momentum and their support helps so much. I'm definitely hoping this wasn't the last time we play here this season."

How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams split the first 18 points, going back and forth through the first third. With the score tied 9-9, however, the Badgers got hot, getting two kills, a block and a pair of service aces to spur a 6-1 run. They went into the media timeout leading 15-10. Minnesota responded with five straight to tie it up, getting two aces from Hanson and two blocks from Myers, forcing a Wisconsin timeout. UW did the same thing to the 'U', scoring the next five after that, taking a 20-15 lead and forcing a Gophers timeout. UW would get its lead up to as many as eight at 23-15 before the 'U' tallied three straight to cut the deficit to five at 23-18, forcing a Badgers timeout. The visitors would close out set one, 25-18. Minnesota had just five kills compared to 19 for Wisconsin, hitting .074 to UW's .300.

SET 2 | Wisconsin came out hot again, scoring seven of the first 10 before Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers would get within three at 9-6 after a kill from Kinney before UW scored three of the next four to go up 12-7. A Badgers service error and a kill from Hanson made it 12-9 before two kills and an ace made it 15-9, UW, forcing Minnesota's last timeout. The Gophers would get back in it by scoring four of the next five, getting two kills from Hanson, one from Kinney and another ace from Hanson. A block from Myers and Swenson cut the lead to 16-14 before the Badgers scored the next two. After a service error made it 18-15, Wisconsin scored the next five to go up 23-15. Two kills from Kinney and one from Gilk made it 23-18, forcing a UW timeout. A kill and an ace from Wisconsin ended the set with another 25-18 victory.

SET 3 | Wisconsin scored six of the first nine in the third set, taking an early lead. Kills from Gilk and Taylor made it 7-5 before a UW kill and Minnesota error made it 9-5, forcing a Gophers timeout. Two UW errors and a kill from Myers made it 9-8, but the visitors would bounce back with the next two points. A service error and a Kinney kill made it 11-10, Badgers. The two teams exchanged the next few points before a 3-0 UW run made it 16-12, forcing another Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would get no closer the rest of the way as Wisconsin finished on an 8-4 run to win, 25-17, taking the sweep.
