Gophers Close out Homestand with Win Over Chicago State

Cade Tyson scored a game-high 22 points, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Isaac Asuma had a season-high 14 points to lead Minnesota (4-1) to a 66-54 win over Chicago State at Williams Arena.
Minnesota led by as many as 14 points early, and the Gophers had a seven-point halftime lead that grew to an 11-point advantage early in the second half. The Cougars put together an 18-6 run to briefly lead by two points, but Minnesota closed the game with a 21-7 run to remain undefeated at home this season.
Tyson, who entered the night as the Big Ten's second-leading scorer, led the Gophers in scoring for the fifth time. He was 6-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-8 from three-point range, and 7-of-8 at the line, while tying his season-high with six rebounds. Crocker-Johnson tied his season-high with 15 points and grabbed seven boards, his first game this season in which he had less than double-digit rebounds. Asuma reached double-figures for the second time this season, while Langston Reynolds finished with six points and a season-best six assists to lead the team, and Chansey Willis Jr. tied his career-high with six steals and added five points, five assists, and five rebounds. Robert Vaihola led the Gophers with eight rebounds, as Minnesota finished with a 41-29 advantage on the glass, which included 14 offensive boards.
As a team, Minnesota made 19-of-52 (.365) field goals, 7-of-28 three-pointers, and 21-of-27 (.778) free throws, and the Gophers were credited with assists on 18 of their 19 made field goals. CSU made 22-of-55 (.400) field goals, but was just 4-of-14 (.286) from long-range, and 6-of-10 at the foul line. Marcus Tankersley led the Cougars with 16 points, while Braelon Bush was the only other player in double-figures with 10 points.
The Gophers jumped out to an 8-2 lead to open the game, including three-pointers from Crocker-Johnson and Asuma. Minnesota stretched its lead to 20-8 on a 6-0 run, including a three-pointer and a layup by Tyson, forcing a Chicago State timeout with 10:35 left in the half. The Cougars cut the lead to 22-12, but Tyson knocked down his second trey of the half and Willis Jr. scored on a jumper in the lane to make it 27-14 with 8:04 left. An 8-2 CSU run trimmed Minnesota's lead to 29-22 at the final media timeout of the half, and the Cougars extended the run to 10-2 to pull within five, but Minnesota led 31-24 at the half.

Tankersley paced the Cougars with 10 points at the break.
Minnesota started the second half with a dunk from Tyson, Crocker-Johnson's second three of the night, and a layup by Asuma to extend the lead back to 11 points, but CSU hit its second three-pointer of the half as part of a 9-2 run to pull within four points at 40-36. Buckets from Vaihola and Willis Jr. made it 44-38, but Bush connected on his second trey of the half to pull the Cougars within three points and force Niko Medved to call timeout with 12:20 left. CSU's extended run reached 18-6 over a span of 9:21, giving it a 45-44 lead with 8:58 left. Tyson ended a five-minute scoreless drought and tied the game at 45-45 by making the second of two free throws with 8:05 remaining, but another Bush jumper put the Cougars up 47-45.
Needing a spark, the Gophers went on an 8-0 run, capped by a fastbreak dunk by Reynolds that forced a CSU timeout with 4:09 left. Following the break, Asuma beat the shot clock with a corner three to make it 56-47. The Cougars narrowed the lead to 58-52, but Tyson connected on his third three-pointer and the Gophers added three free throws for a 64-52 lead with 0:55 left and Minnesota sealed its fourth win of the season by closing the game with the 21-7 run over the final 6:41.
