Minnesota Wins Twice Sunday to Finish Fifth at National Duals Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 10 Minnesota (4-1) won both of its matches Sunday to finish in fifth place at the National Duals Invitational presented by Paycom in Tulsa, Okla.

A 15-14 win over No. 17 Missouri (5-2) in the consolation semifinals sent the Golden Gophers to the fifth-place match where they routed No. 11 Virginia Tech, 22-10. With the win, Minnesota takes home $50,000 as part of the NDI payout structure. That's on top of the $20,000 that each team was given for participating in the event.

The Gophers were facing the Hokies (4-2) for the second time on the weekend after dispatching Virginia Tech in Saturday's opening match, 19-17. The second meeting wasn't nearly as close as Minnesota won seven of the 10 matches, including four straight from 157-184 to seal the victory.

The first five matches alternated victors with the Gophers prevailing in three of the outcomes.

No. 8 Jore Volk topped No. 4 Eddie Ventresca for the second time in as many days with a 4-2 win. After a Hokie decision, No. 8 Vance VomBaur also locked in a second win over No. 17 Tom Crook, winning 4-1. A major decision at 149 gave Virginia Tech its lone lead of the match at 7-6, but 157 turned the tide.

No. 14 Charlie Millard started a stretch of four straight wins for Minnesota by dispatching Collin Gaj, 9-4, at 157 pounds. No. 11 Andrew Sparks avenged an earlier loss to Ryan Burton with an 11-2 major decision, extending the Gopher lead to 13-7. No. 22 Ethan Riddle then picked up his third win of the young season over No. 23 Sergio Desiante, a 13-4 major decision.

The dual was clinched at 184 as top-ranked Max McEnelly recorded a tech fall over No. 22 Jaden Bullock for the second time this weekend. A 21-5 (6:05) win for McEnelly pushed the lead to 22-7, putting the match out of reach.

After a loss at 197, heavyweight Bennett Tabor put the exclamation point on the weekend with a 3-2 win over No. 18 Jimmy Mullen.

To reach the fifth-place match, Minnesota had to outlast Missouri. Meeting for the first time in a dual since 2012, the Golden Gophers won their fifth straight over the Tigers in a back-and-forth slugfest that saw all 10 matches decided by decision.

Like they did later against Virginia Tech, the teams alternated the first five matches with Minnesota winning at 125, 141 and 157.

Volk got the Gophers started with a 2-1 decision at 125 over No. 28 Mack Mauger, thanks to a riding time point. Missouri tied it up at 133, but VomBaur put the Gophers back on top with a 10-4 win at 141 over No. 19 Zeke Seltzer.

The Tigers tied again after a decision at 149, only to see Minnesota go back in front in a pivotal match at 157.

Scoreless through the first period, Millard escaped from Seth Mendoza, only to see Mendoza get a takedown. Millard escaped again and got a takedown of his own to lead 5-3. Millard prevailed 6-4, and Missouri was then docked a team point when Mendoza threw his headgear following the match. The docked team point ended up being the difference in the final score.

A 9-2 win at 165 for Sparks over Joel Mylin pushed the lead to 12-5 for Minnesota, but Missouri rallied to win the next three matches, including a 6-3 win at 184 for No. 8 Aeoden Sinclair over McEnelly. It was the first loss of McEnelly's career in the regular season and in a dual.

The Gophers trailed 14-12 going into the final bout at heavyweight between No. 15 Koy Hopke and No. 25 Jarrett Stoner. The match was scoreless through two periods, but Hopke did have nearly two minutes of riding time. In the third, Hopke secured the match and the dual with a late takedown in a 5-0 victory.

Minnesota returns to action on Nov. 25 when it hosts South Dakota State in its home opener. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Williams Arena.
