Two assistants added to 'U' crew
MINNEAPOLIS - Head coach Alicea Strodel announced the addition of Chris Rechen and Sky Teegen to the University of Minnesota rowing team's staff as it enters the 2024-25 season. Both will serve as assistant coaches for the Golden Gophers, with Rechen taking over as the recruiting coordinator and Teegen focusing on novice mentorship and team operations.
"I am really happy to have a coaching staff in place leading into the school year," Strodel said. "Chris and Sky bring unique perspectives and experiences to the boathouse. In just a short period of time, they've had an impact with their energy and enthusiasm for the sport. Additionally, Aaron Schnell will be taking on a coaching role and I look forward to working alongside him and his critical eye. Coach Laura Feinson provides program continuity and a serious work ethic as she works with the novice group again this year."
Rechen spent two seasons as an assistant coach at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., prior to joining the Gophers. He guided a combination of the 3V8, 2V8, and V4 crews for the Crusaders, and led the V4 to a first-place finish at the 2023 New England Rowing Championships. Rechen also led the national recruiting efforts of high school athletes since 2023, serving as the team's recruiting coordinator, and headed walk-on recruitment on campus during the 2022-23 campaign.
A native of Simsbury, Conn., Rechen was a four-year letter winner for the men's rowing team at Marist College, including two years on the V8 crew, and served as a captain during his senior year of 2019-20. With the Red Foxes, he was a medalist at the Head of the Charles Regatta and twice earned Intercollegiate Rowing Association All-Academic honors.
Teegen comes to Dinkytown following a five-year career as a student-athlete at Wisconsin from 2019-24, where she was a leader on the team. She competed on the 2V8 at last year's Big Ten Conference Championships where the boat placed fourth. In 2021, Teegen earned a seat on the V4 crew to race at the NCAA Championships where the Badgers finished in 14th place overall.
The Crystal Lake, Ill., product was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team in each of her five seasons in Madison, while being recognized as a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in her final two years. Teegen also served as the Strategic Partnerships Chair for SAESO (Student-Athletes Equally Supporting Others) where she advocated for student-athletes from diverse backgrounds to feel welcomed and have a sense of community on campus.
The Gophers begin the 2024-25 season at the 44th Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta on Saturday, October 5.
