MINNEAPOLIS – No. 8 Minnesota saw five wrestlers go undefeated Sunday at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D.
The tournament, which featured round-robin and pool play, had a field that included competitors from host-South Dakota State, Air Force, Arizona State, Nebraska, North Dakota State and Oklahoma. In all, 17 Golden Gophers were in action at the event and 12 came home with records of .500 or better.
True freshman Charlie Millard won all three of his matches at 157 pounds by major decision, outscoring opponents 37-9. The highlight was a 13-4 win over No. 14 Cobe Siebrecht of South Dakota State, the first ranked win of Millard's career.
At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Ethan Riddle went 3-0 on the day, including a pair of bonus-point wins. He posted a 11-3 major decision over former Gopher Devin Wasley (NDSU) and followed with a 22-6 tech fall versus LJ Araujo (Nebraska).
Also at 174, true freshman Jed Wester had himself a perfect 3-0 day. He started with a 13-3 major decision over Cooper French (Nebraska), before adding a pair of decisions, ultimately outscoring opponents 27-8.
At 197 pounds, redshirt junior Gabe Nagel dominated the day with a 3-0 record. He started with a pin in just 1:59, added a major decision and ended with an 8-2 decision to improve to 5-1 on the season. That lone loss is to teammate and returning All-American Isaiah Salazar at last week's Mountaineer Invite.
Redshirt freshman Gavin Nelson stayed undefeated with a second straight 3-0 tournament performance at 197. He began the day with a pin of North Dakota State's Aiden Hight in just 21 seconds, tied for 10th fastest in team history. Nelson then posted an 18-3 tech fall and added a 9-5 decision to go to 6-0 on the year.
Redshirt juniors Jager Eisch (133) and Bennett Tabor (285), and redshirt freshman Rhett Koenig (141) also had winning records on the day with 2-1 performances.
Minnesota is back in action next weekend with a pair of duals. First up is a Friday night contest at North Dakota State at 6 p.m., followed by a home dual with Campbell on Sunday at 1 p.m.
