Gopher Spirit Squad Set to Host Events Prior to UCA College Nationals
1/3/2024 6:17:00 PM | Athletics, Spirit Squad, Dance
The University of Minnesota Spirit Squad is set to host a pair of upcoming events within the next few weeks in preparation for the UCA/UDA National Championships, Jan. 12-14 in Orlando. Fla.
The Golden Gophers will host the Best of the Best Dance Showcase on Jan. 5 at Williams Arena. The event is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start with general admission tickets available HERE. Spectators will be treated to exceptional high school and collegiate dance performances from across the state.
The Gophers are also hosting their annual Nationals Showcase on Sunday, January 7, 2023. The showcase will be held at Maturi Pavilion at 12:00 pm with doors opening at 11:30 am. This event is free to the public.
The showcase will feature multiple performances from the Cheer Team, Dance Team, and Goldy Gopher. The event will begin with the Cheer Team's Game Day Routine. A collegiate Game Day routine includes three sections: Fight Song, Sideline, and Timeout. Spectators can expect to see many of the traditions straight off of the Minnesota sidelines incorporated into this performance where fan interaction is highly encouraged.
The Dance Team will take the floor next to perform their Jazz routine as the current national title-holders. This year's choreography was a collaboration between the team's coaching staff and athletes, making it exceptionally personal for each dancer on the floor, and features an homage to the earliest days of the team's championship legacy.
For the first time in program history, a stunt group from the Cheer Team will compete in the Girls "4" Group Stunt division at this year's National Championship. This group will be performing their all-girl stunt routine for fans for the first time at this year's send-off, showcasing exceptional stunting difficulty and technical skill.
Up next will be Goldy Gopher. With the aid of creative props, Goldy will tell a story through a 90 second skit. In a competitive division that is highly ranked by an entry video, Goldy qualified to compete at the National level as one of three mascots representing the Big Ten.
The Cheer Team will return to the floor for their Small Coed Routine. Coming off a bronze finish in this division at last year's National Championship, this year's team is building bigger stunts and pyramids, with additional basket and tumbling skill difficulty to create a jam packed routine.
The Dance Team will close the show with their Pom Routine. This year's Pom routine was choreographed by Anna Hiltey and Dance Team Coaches Amanda Gaines and Tia Tumbleson. The reigning-champion team is prepared to awe with this highly technical, fast-paced performance.
The Minnesota Spirit Squad is one of the most decorated and historic programs in the nation, with 25 combined UCA/UDA National Championships. The program will travel to Orlando, Fla. on Friday, January 12 to compete in the 2024 UCA/UDA National Championships, competing in six divisions program-wide.
